THR 12 days ago - how much bed rest?

Posted , 4 users are following.

My husband had a hip replacement under general anaesthetic 12 days ago. His sleep pattern is intermittent, he is on tramadol and paracetamol to control the pain.

He is currently staying in bed until early to mid afternoon and then he gets up and dressed takes a little exercise and sits in a chair until bedtime.

I know everyone is different and heals differently, but should he be trying to be more mobile? He tires very easily and I know it’s extremely early days but as it’s his first hip replacement, just wanting to find out others' experiences

hi eve. it is hard but he has had a major op ,you dont say how old your husband is? i had a THR 02/10 and im 60 years old , im now aiming to walk about a mile a day , do the exercises they sent me home with twice a day ( i found 3 to much) . i have started pottering around the kitchen and doing light duties ironing etc.

but it is a shock to the system , try to encourage him to do a little more each day and when he is in bed do his exercises that promote circulation . what was he like pre op im very active and independent and an utter control freak around the house...lol..

maybe give him little tasks like folding washing or peeling veg.. i know im spouting of here but im just trying to be constructive

well i hope he picks up soon, keep him moving, and good luck!

    Hi Eve,

He really needs to move more, the exercises he was given should be done probably three times a day at least. Maybe, he could start walking up and down the garden a few times, if you have one, then up and down the road gradually increasing. sitting around most of the day will not help the hip to regain movement. I know he will be on an anticoagulant at the moment, when he finishes them, he will need to move more as he would not want a blood clot.
