Personally for hip protection cycling and swimming is your best bet. Low impact sports. The stabbing pain needs to be checked - perhaps consider booking an appointment with your consultant?

Have had similar issues with my thigh. couple things I have done that help. First do some weight work on your legs. Leg Press typically helps. I also drink a protien shake to ensure I get enough protien to help the muscles recover.

ibuprophen helps me as well, or aleve which seems to help more, but be careful aleve thins the blood, so if you cut yourself you will bleed like a stuck pig.

Talk to your Doc on weight loss. I spend a lot of time on the treadmill, hiking and lifint weights; however, controlling my food makes the most difference. limiting bread, white rice, white potatoes, and the like help me considerably on the weight front.

Make sure you are getting enough vitamin suplements as well. Vitamin D makes a difference on nightly sleep for my wife and I. Vitamin B helps as well with metabolism and sleep. more than just B12.

    Hope that helps

Thankyou for your response.I have been more careful food wise lately.I got a puppy shortly after my op as a rehabilitation which made me walk her every day otherwise I don't think I would have walked much,i am on my feet walking for work,so the thought of treadmills and x trainers after or before work does not sound great but need motivation too I suppose.I will speak to my GP.I also have trouble waking up and get tired in the afternoon still. You sound motivated and hope i can be too, must try the vitamins too.👍🏻

I have had both hips replaced twice. Not motivated, just well practiced smile

I got a fitbit a couple years ago to help motivate me to move during the day. I work from home and on a computer, so not overly conducive to walking during the day.

If you lose weight and your glutes shrink like mine did, you would be well advised to build up the muscles on them before the op.

I had trouble ditching the sticks as my buttock muscles were weak.

I know several people who have been referred to slimming groups by the GP, this means you get it for free. Worth seeing your GP to ask about whilst also asking about the pain. In this area people can also be referred to exercise classes, rather than just physio, by the GP.
