I am 66 and 103 kg. I had not exercised for yrs due to joint pain. So I wasent very fit.
I have stuck to my physio exercises and now do hydro exercises. Since starting hydro pain around my wound area and groin has become worse.
Is it possible I am doing to much in the water. I now find it difficult to walk without a cane.
I feel I am not doing very well after 3 mths. Am I normal ?

Hi Sue,
Please Post what the surgeon had evaluated about your pain from your appt and plan for recovery. Very concerned about the issues you have described. Can help many others here too!
I use my iPhone to record dr appt. this way I have prepared questions and can follow up with information from the doc. Later I listen to,the recording in a relaxed home environment . Helps a lot I don't always remember it all at the time .
Wishing you success on your journey, that you will get better soon!😊
Hope xxx

Hi Sue,
You mentioned that you weren't particularly fit by the time you had your FHR, and that your weight is slightly above what is considered a healthy weight (according to health stats). That describes how I was by the time I had a hip replacement. I was advised to take things slowly, even though in my mind I wanted to do otherwise. It's very easy at first to overdo it in the water because there is no fear of falling. I love to do the breast stroke, but the kicks involved can lead to stress in the inner thigh & groin area if those muscles are not strong enough. Try slow controlled movements instead of quick kicks.
I'd suggest using heat prior to your workout and some stretching, and then more stretches and ice packs afterwards. The heat will allow the muscles to relax more prior to the workout and the ice will help calm the muscle down & prevent swelling which also reduces pain.
Remember that 3 months is still quite early, as it can take about a year for a full recovery. To answer your question, it is easy to stress those muscles out in the beginning. So what you are dealing with is common. Over the next few weeks you will regain strength back around the hips and be able to do much more.
Wishing you the very best on your continued recovery

It could be possible PT is too much . I did pt for 10"day in rehab after hip revision. was exhausted. Came home the dr asked if I wanted more PT I said no I just want to rest the doc said ok rest is sometimes a good thing. Any time I need it I can go and I have gotten better by just taking it easy. One day at a time. Walking has been a good way to exercise and some of the exercisesPt sent hippo me with me. Some pain .Not as severe . It takes time baby steps. Every day I get a little stronger and better. Almost walking with no cane.

Afternoon Sue. Now with the new hip you are able to move muscles that you were not able to do before and for awhile. Like myself. So these muscles are being pulled and stretched and having to move like never before and that causes pain and discomfort. I know it is for me. I'm still having issues with stiffness in my new joint. It's just going to take us longer to heal. Muscles are being retrained to work again. Just take it slower and rest. I'm still icing and heating myself after a little over 7 months. Best of luck to you and hope you feel better soon. Linda

Sue, it's very easy to overdo things when in the water. My suggestion is to stop all the extra activties (on land and in the water) for at least a week or two and see if the pain lessens. You may just need to build your strength up more slowly!

Hi Sue we are all different. It can take over a year to get back to normal. But I would advise you to try Reflexology, it's very good. It's amazing what they can pick up on.Also a hydrotherapy pool. This is the best way. Regards Amanda

I would say that you are normal .. I had the same situation --- gaining weight while being in denial about the severe osteo-arthirits I was diagnosed with - declining mobility etc...
I had 2 THR surgeries 6 months apart and that did not help me in getting back in shape ---
Just go gently and please, do not compare yourself to others, okay ?
Remember that THR surgery is a major invasive one and your body is adjusting while healing ----
come back here anytime when you ahve a concern or question ...
and give yourself a pat on your back for doing so well -
big warm hug
