THR and Reconstruction

Posted , 7 users are following.

I was wondering if anyone has had a thr and reconstruction at the same time. My doctors keep telling me it is very serious surgery and not easily done. I have added an xray of my hips so you can understand what has to be changed and what is wrong. I also want to know if anyone has anything similar to this and how they are coping. I struggle with many everyday things and am hoping thisoperation is going to change everything for me.

    Hi sarah,

Which doctors? Do you mean GPs or surgeons?

I would be guided by what the consultant says. They can foresee the technical difficulties of all the DIY and rebuilding they need to do to put things right.

If they say very serious surgery that is Doctor-speak for "We don't want to tackle this in case it goes wrong" and/or "We don't want this one as a bad mark on our records if it is not a success"

I should take the hint and approach with caution.

    Hugs,

    Shirley

      Hi sarah,

Good. That sounds more hopeful. If he says he will do it, then he must know he can make it a success. wink

Yeah I hope but i dont think he had a choice anyway. The longer we wait the worse it will become.

Wow iv never spoken to anyone with the same issues as mine. How long did you wait before you got yours? the doctor said i really should get it done now as the quality of my life would be a lot better after even though I am rather young for the surgery they believe my life will be better after whilst it lasts.

I found out in april last year, totally denied it till July when a i found this wonderful site, with the help of evey one i said i would have it done october onwards, then got the day friday 13 November.. I was a mess with nerves for three weeks before, the day i was a wreck but after its all done, you think why.  I regret now not having it done sooner if i knew

Do you mean you only found out bout your hips a year ago or that you needed the op? Iv know for 2 years i needed it but he wanted me to wait another year but i put my foot down and said no i need it now. Im surprisingly not overly nervous yet,  Im just trying to do as much research as humanly possible. On the other hand i dont know if that  is worse hahaha.

First it was sciatica, then muscle problems, slipped disc , so it took a while to get around to it, plus i ignored it for year or longer. All the research just gets you more anxcious. If you need to know ask here

Dear Sarah - you will be a very happy lady after you get that mess dealt with. I had a bone on bone, although not as bad as yours, a cyst had eaten a hole in my pelvis as well, the doctors told me they would steal a piece of bone from elsewhere in my pelvis to graft/fix the hole, then insert the cup of the THR. The hip that they did the extensive work on is the perfect THR. I was walking the corridors of the hospital by day two even though I was having major problems with morphine. Second THR which wasn't as bad is my problem one.

Thats a relief? where your hips higher up to. Im just wondering if my scar will be in a different place because of it or will it be a lot longer? What problems were you having with morphinne? glad to here you were up and about though.

My right hip was fused to my pelvis so leg lenght was about 3.5 difference. Now totally different thanks to my brillian surgeon, my scar starts at my hip and down the side of my thigh.

Scar in same place, both sides, a hands width from the seam line of your undies, towards the back, give or take a little dependant on the surgeon, length of scar I think depends on if you are overweight or not, mine is a elongated straigthened C shape starting fairly high on my buttock and goes again about a hands width below my undies line down my leg. Another tiny scar around the back towards my spine, my husband seems to think thats where they must have taken the graft bone from, never had any problems with cuts, they healed beautifully, in about 2 weeks, dissolving stitches and super glue apparently, only a pale white line thats hardly noticeable now 18months and 9 months later. Morphine as dr's found out after 1st THR makes me vomit, constantly, even on an empty stomach, and of course I told them before my surgery, having previous experience, but what did they do, take no notice, for 2nd THR they were telling me they were not going to use morphine for me, they used another drug that did the same job, killed off pain. How people take it for fun I just don't know. Being in Australia we are opposite you give or take a little. Heat wave tommorrow, not looking foward to very hot day.
