THR Hospital Stay Duration

How long did everyone stay in hospital after their op?

I was only in for four days and three nights after my hip replacement. I only managed to stay at home one day before being readmitted due to a hospital acquired infection.

I then spent a further six days in hospital on an IV drip. The consultant never really identified the real cause of the infection. It was either very severe gastroenteritis or based on some of the blood antibodies that were found Hepatitis A. It was not a very pleasant experience.

Sure doesn't sound like a very pleasant experience Adamjackma! Wow.....a lot to go through. First time around for me I was in three nights....second time (just a couple weeks ago)...in hospital for 5 days and in rehab for 5 days and they even wanted to keep me longer as I still had pneumonia from asperating during surgery. Wasn't a pleasant experience for me this time round either. Hope you are feeling better now....Wishing you well....Barb

      Thanks Barb

I am feeling much more like myself now. I hope the pneumonia didn't last long for you. I did have breathing problems during my general anaesthetic, but all I was left with was a slightly more throat, so I feel I can forget about that bit. Although from the comments of the anaesthetist I don't think he will.

That was really bad luck. I had my op on Thursday evening and out Sunday morning. Now 3weeks post op. Am 80years old and count myself really lucky. No pain, no swelling, clips out and can barely see scar. Really hope you recover quickly, expect your a lot younger than me so am sure you feel much better soon. Good luck.

      Thanks Bet

I am only 38,so yes generally I feel fine. I have the same poor sleep as everyone else, but that seems a small price considering I now have a working and pretty much pain free hip.

      Thanks Kim

I have found it really depends on the car. I have both a Toyota Precision and a Hyundai IX20.the Toyota is much higher up, but easier to get in and a lot comfier as a passenger.

I have also been given a lift in a friends BMW, which being so much lower was hard work to get into.

A pillow or pad to sit on in a car makes a big difference. I have a Toyota Corolla and made a 40 mile trip 9 days po with no problem.

I was in hospital three nights post op. I think they aim for 2 nights where I was. Not sure why I was kept in for an extra day.

Thanks Renee I am doing well know and getting around well. Most days I am capable of walking a good distance with only one crutch and I have very little pain.

Having resorted to sleeping tablets to get a good night's sleep, it had made a world if difference. I am now feel much more capable again and it seems to be helping with the recovery if my hip.

Next milestone is Monday, when I have the last of the stitches removed.

    Adam,

That doesnt sound like a nice experience at all (not that THR is).  I was terrified of getting an infection.

I was in surgery at 13:00 on the wedensday and out after 3 nights. However during the whole time the nurses kept telling me I'd be in for at least 5 nights. So it was a welcome relief when my consultant came in on the Saturday and asked why I wasnt ready to go home!

      Thanks David

I think I am over the infection now and making good progress on getting my mobility back to a decent level.

Hopefully your recovery is going well for you.
