THR NO post op check up???

Posted , 18 users are following.

8th Aug I had THR for right hip.  I am a fit 61 year old.  After discharge from hospital I rcvd an appointment letter for check up 6 1/2 weeks post op.  On arriving at hospital for this, I was surprised to learn it was only with a physio.  He said you seem to be walking well. Yes true but I have muscle pain down the whole leg - cramps on many occasions, extremely painful and actual joint feels as tho been kicked.  Oh this is normal expect for a further 6 months or so....  So when is next visit? Oh one year from now.   I have NOT seen my consultant post op.... Is this normal?   I live on my own but I feel as tho after the op, you are basically left to get on with it with no support.  Had visit with private physio and she said all muscles in leg wre extremely tight, and she was very surprised that I had not seen a consultant.   What are others experience.  From the forum it seems most have 6 week and 3 month and 6 month follow ups?

Hi, it seems like your getting all your answers and that it the norm for your area.

I'm in the states and we have a 1 week apt then month then they start spreading it out big time.  Seems like if you have a problem you should be able to talk to some one about it and be seen if nec.

I read that you are doing your strengthening exercises with help but I'm telling you the best way to get relief from the cramping, tightening and weird pains is to get deep massage.  It really helps.

    Good luck with your recovery.

Left THR at gloucester Royal , 6 week appointment turned out to be physio but I asked to see consultant because of the serious bout (lasting 5 days) of delirium the result of drug cocktail in particular the madazolan not sure of spelling but I needed my consultant to ask for a meeting to disscuss this . as far as the thr was concerned they x-ray 12 months after op , finally going to get physio end of october more than 6 months after op. cutting costs by not providing proper rehab and physio is very shortsighted as people would get there health and mobility back quicker. I believe that we must protect the national health rather than cut physio services they could make a charge for bed and breakfast of course they would have to improve quality of food but £15 a day for food and maybe £15 for bed. after all we would have to buy the food at home etc.

Charging for food has been talked about for years.

It's said that it would be too difficult to implement..would it be a standard charge, would you still pay if you were too ill to eat etc etc.

It sounds a good idea but can't see it ever happening.

The few times I've been hospitalised I've always found the food to be very good..but then I was hungry cheesygrin

Thanks for all the responses...  Yes I can understand/appreciate about NOT unnecesarily overloading the NHS, however, I just contrast between the follow up treatment I had post last year's arthroscopy on the same joint and the lack of similar post op follow up now, for a much more serious op.  I also compare with someone else I know of -who also does competitive riding - and she had 6 week and 3 and 6 month follow ups - altho might need to ask if she was private!  It is just the diff in care over the country... AND... lack of guidelines on how much one can push yourself/your body in getting back to fitness, if you do not see any health professionals how can you know and like me .. perhaps did too much too soon. Yes they have simple exercises in the info leaflet, but I could do those Ok even before I left hospital. They say walking is good.. so I did, only to be told that 3 miles a day too far...  And given no advice as to how to address the tight muscles which were cramping bearing in mind  you cannot bend over your self to massage thigh and calf!  If I had not paid myslef for private physio this situation would have continued and only been alleviated by pain killers!! Not an ideal situation either.  Oh well will phone consultant sec tomorrow and see what happens then..

On the massage point, get yourself to a deep tissue massage, try it a couple times and you will be amazed how it loosens you up.

      So worth it!!

In the US, I can recall a surgeon visit at about 6 weeks, and then one at a 4 months or so and then one year......

I've only seen the surgeon 3 times and it's 4 yrs post op this month.

I did email the surgeon's Patient Assistant a lot as I had a lot of issues and I wanted some answers......

This has NOT been the greatest time of my life.

Saw other workers to try to help with the mess I'm left with from Anterior....

Sounds like in your country, it varies in areas...

My experience hae been the surgeon saw me for followups.

Your surgeon needs to address your issues. Certainly, an assistant is not qualified to discuss or act on the things that are bothering you.

My advice is you call the office and tell the the appt schedulers you want a consult with your surgeon and NOT an assistant.

    Good luck.

Meslation: With all the issues I've had I would have to be camped out at surgeon's office...his assistant sees his patients all the time and I'm sure those online, he trys to help....he assists the surgeon in the OR, so he knows a lot.

And each and every time I would go back to the surgeon I pay a $50 copay as we don't have your insurance....

I kept waiting for the nerve damage to go away and I'm still waiting....I don't think they would want to go back in for this damage and I wouldn't let them anyway...more cutting, more damage is how I see it. Nerves need to repair or they don't.

The surgeon once sent me to "his" back doc in his group, this was at one of my visits to him, and she gouged medicare with a horrific bill of $600 for her hr appt...she didn't do anything I didn't know about my back.

I don't trust docs a lot so try to stay away as much as I can. J

Hi I had mine done at an NHS treatment centre in banbury Oxfordshire and had a 7 week check with surgeon and physio, another one due at 6 months post op with surgeon and physio plus I have the physio (attached to the hospital) at the end of the phone all the time, I think it's shocking that you haven't had more consideration, in the end it's far better to provide you with the tools you need to recover properly and well, best of luck x

      Hi Jackie

I did reply to the original mail saying I had a 6 week appointment then a 6 month appointment...X Ray at both of them to compare.

In between those I had one physio appointment.

You mentioning that you have the physio on the end of the phone made me think.....although I'm discharged he is happy to take a call from me and will see me again if I ask.....I dont have to have a referral again....so I'm lucky in that respect as well.

I have an appointment with the consultant in 2 weeks time and if he hasnt said physio again I'll just ring the physio up and sort it out myself.

I had my surgery just over 4 weeks ago.  I saw the physio team just before I went to theatre, the day after surgery, and again the next day when they had me climbing a flight of stairs! That afternoon I went home with instructions on how to exercise etc.  they also gave me an appointment for 14 days to have clips removed and then to see the physio.  At that appointment they put me through my paces and gave me a further appointment for 2 weeks, which is tomorrow.

I have an appointment to see the surgeon 7 weeks post surgery.  He has said I will see him again at 3 months, 6 months and discharged, hopefully, at a 12 month visit.

i would be very unhappy if I did not get to be checked out by my consultant.  It doesn't seem normal to me.  Surely they should check all is ok and not leave this to the physio team?

so no, I don't think it is good enough to leave you without support.

Not only did I never see my surgeon, but come to think of it I was discharged on my 3rd day  by the ward sister, shortly after 30mins of exercises with a physio..This might sound irregular but is I believe within NHS guidelines..but they were very short of beds iirc.

When I get my other hip replaced I will make sure I do things differently, but after your first ever major surgery your not really in a state of mind to make any demands.

I think I might have been lucky. They X-rayed my hip, phoned the surgeon and he came in to check this out and then came to ask if I was happy to go home, or did I want another day or two.   I went home!  I really can't fault the surgeon and hospital team.

my only criticism, and this is really down to my ignorance and insecurity, is .... How do you know when you haven't experienced a thr before that all the aches, pains, are ok and normal, and should I really be bending that much, when can I sit on a lower seat, when can I go to the pub and sit on a normal chair again!

this forum has really helped me, so thank you for all your posts 😘

    Hi

I think I wss reasonably lucky.....I'm in the UK and had my op {1st one} on Friday and was out on Monday.....that is fairly normal here unless there are problems,

I have a lovely consultant/surgeon that I saw a few times before the op, he then popped in and had a word before the operation. After that 2 girls {physios} eventually came {2nd day I think} gave me the list, showed me the exercises, and had me doing them and doing one flight of stairs....up and down......and said that I seemed OK as far as they were concerned then the evening before i was discarged....quick vist from consultant/surgeon and he said yes ....gobiggrin tomorrow morning.

It was the physio I wasnt so happy about.....left on my own with the list at home, not feeling very energetic I didnt do them as much {or at all somedays} as I should. If I had had to see the physio I would have done them more regularly because I know he would want to see a change since the last time.....but on my own, lying down one could only be done upstairs so had to make a journey up there to do them etc!!!!!!!

Physio saw me once in the 6 weeks and said everything was fine

Oh well that one was  and a haalf years ago

    Love

    Eileen
