THR NO post op check up???

Posted , 18 users are following.

8th Aug I had THR for right hip.  I am a fit 61 year old.  After discharge from hospital I rcvd an appointment letter for check up 6 1/2 weeks post op.  On arriving at hospital for this, I was surprised to learn it was only with a physio.  He said you seem to be walking well. Yes true but I have muscle pain down the whole leg - cramps on many occasions, extremely painful and actual joint feels as tho been kicked.  Oh this is normal expect for a further 6 months or so....  So when is next visit? Oh one year from now.   I have NOT seen my consultant post op.... Is this normal?   I live on my own but I feel as tho after the op, you are basically left to get on with it with no support.  Had visit with private physio and she said all muscles in leg wre extremely tight, and she was very surprised that I had not seen a consultant.   What are others experience.  From the forum it seems most have 6 week and 3 month and 6 month follow ups?

    Hello everyone,

Well I spoke with Consultant office just now and have been informed that having seen the Hip Pgysio 6 weeks post op, that is all that is nec.  I explained that follow up was difft after arthroscopy, yes but THR is difft. The Hip Physio is the specialist.   Yes but long distance horse riding the hip is under going difft movements compared to to the rest of the population... yes see the hip physio if there are issues.   OK  let's go with this and see what happens in November when I start riding again.....  So if it all goes pear shaped which is what happened last time.....we shall see.   I did ask the hip physio about riding and all he said was .. "what did the consultant say?", so he did not know what  to advise...  Problem is none have experience of this..  Back to Horse and Hound  forum I guess.....  Thanks everyone.  What I need is a consultant who rides!

Before surgery my consultant answered yes to riding.  Ha, well I would never dream of mounting a horse 11 months post surgery.  The posting? How can you put any impact on it... Mine feels very precarious and I treat like fine china...maybe the extended trot - permanently. Or standing up in stirrups, but unprepared for a spook and sideways move... You would have to know your horse from birth I'd say and the risk even then not worth it. Fracturing the femur doesn't bear thinking about. I dismounted one last time and felt a jot to one hip and that was it, X-ray showed just how advanced I was and that last ride done with loads a painkillers. False sense of security as you can't feel what damage you're doing which wd stop you from doing in the first place.  lungeing wd be my limit now and I'm yr age and slim n fit etc. but do let me know when you take yr maiden post surgical voyage in the saddle... You are v courageous..

There are a few endurance riders who have had THR, one had a double THR and she is doing 160km 2 yrs on....  It was the lack of "feeling" on right hip side/seat bones that determined the replacement .. that and fact that the hip/upper thigh would "lock" 5 mins after getting up.. so I was unbalanced and my mare, very sentitive to balance was unsettled... to point she ditched me.  as left side more pressure so she spun round to left and I went out the front door having no feeling on right to compensate quick enough... Dismounting was also awkward. The last time I tried dismounting normally, i got stuck with leg over her back and she panicked, thankfully someone was there to get hold of her.. and me...  But then I started to lift leg over her neck...she was patient.. dropped her head and I would grab my leg with my hand and up and over her neck, turn and slide gently to floor.  She would look round OK now you're on the ground.

So November, bring her in. Of course being out for past 6 months, she looks like a coffee table!  Not too sure my hips would spread that far!  So lunge work first, get some weight off, muscle on... and then me on....and hopefully we both get fit ready for some serious riding next Spring.

Sounds like a good goal to have. Take it she's Arab. Lucky you. I had a fab endurance saddle sold with all my kit but got loads a jods and kept body protectors. Can't protect the pelvic girdle tho!

Hi...  according to passport TB X Arab (not reg) but there is something else in there.. bit of section D?  But she has a low heart rate and loves to lead, hates anyone trying to get past her... and moody..a typical ginger!biggrin  A real comfy ride and oh so supple (when at proper condition!).  Also into classical dressage... visiting Carl Hester's yard tomorrow ... so if endurance doesn't pan out, then will concentrate more on that... not for competition tho....just for my own pleasure and I hope hers.

      Hey You,

Orthopedic Surgeon= OS. He's the main guy, we see him at all Apts and he does our surgery.

      Ooopps

Never thought of Orthopaedic surgeon confused........I kept think physiotherapist or something like that......becausein the US its not called physiotherapy is it? Cant remember now.

Thats the same as us except he is just called a surgeon or consultant or in my case Mr Asaadwink  He's lovely.

Does the ops, sees you beforehand and afterwards a few times. I'm still seeing him 8 months later because of this hip fracture 4 weeks post THR

      Thanks for putting me straight

      Hi Ginger

As you know I'm in the UK......I got a follow up appointment with my consultant {OS}wink 6 weeks post op nd an X Ray, then 6 months and an X Ray....they were both fine when he compared them so that was it until I was due my 2nd THR {which was different} In the hospital i was given a sheet of paper and a physiotherapist came round and showed my how to do them 2nd day post op then before I left she made sure I could do the stairs....up and down.

That was it with the hospital physio. Then a letter from the physio to make one appointment and he said everything was fine so I was discharged. Most of us dont seem to get a lot of physio post op

Looks like you have received proper care. But do feel sad for those who don't get follow up.

      Hi

I could have done with more physiotherapy.....not just one visit after I was out of hospital and left to do the exercises on my own. At the beginning when you are still feeling sore you need motivation to do them especially the ones lying down.....I had to go upstairs to do thise so they didnt get done as much as they should havewink

I'm going to ask to see the physio again shorthly about this hip fracture.

I did two months of water treadmill physical therapy. Then started picking up exercises at the fitness center.and walking mileage.Doing all this and eating less still gained all that wt. Frustrated to the max.sad

      Hi Ginger

I can understand your frustration after all that.

Did you do these exercises of your own accord or was it throught the hospital/physiotherapist?

I have got a GP referral to our local leisure centre. I have to go for an induction on Monday.

I'm not sure what they will be able to do with me because I'm still on 2 crutches......not be able to do classeseek I would fall in a heap if I tried LOL

I suppose a few things in the gym

We'll have to wait and see....when you get a referral like that they tailor it to your needs but I've never had these needs before ....never needed crutches except possibley on a very long walk.....not to support me like nowquestion

Oh well it will be interesting.

I'm glad you explained "consultant" it sounds so secretarial.   LoL

I see my surgeon every visit.

Dr Saljeet Sagoo, he has a great attitude.

Saw him today about my swelling a week post op and he just said to keep icing.  Also, to take it slow this time around as its my revision.

He explained a little more about the tendon release and showed me where they do the release at and also told me the 4 cm ball size will make a huge difference.

      Hi

He's far from secretarial LOL .....He was also the surgeon that did both THR's but since I'm consulting him as opposed to him doing surgery we tend to call them consultants then. I have always seen him, never his registrar.

      Your appointment sounds all good.

Very positive......when do you see him again?

No the physical therapist was by dr orders.

But fitness center on my own I go cardio and strengthening. Know not to do lunges either forward or behind. Especially the ones I outv the op leg behind l lunge down. The OS said my hip would pop out.if I did that.

It's funny he demonstrated that movement lolp
