THR postponed

I had my right THR on 18th February and was scheduled for my left THR next week, on 27th May. After my first op I was anaemic and was given a blood transfusion and discharged with iron tablets. I couldn't tolerate the tablets so ordered a liquid iron supplement which I took every day. I discussed this with the GP on the phone. I had to go back to the GP surgery 6 to 8 weeks after the op for a further blood test to check the levels again, which I did. When I phoned for the results I was told they were "within normal limits, no further action required". I tapered off the liquid iron and stopped taking it. It had also upset my stomach and I thought there was no need to continue with it as I was ok.

I had my pre-op for the op due on 27th last week and the blood test results show that I am anaemic again and I have been told that my op has be postponed for at least 6 weeks. I may have to have an iron infusion. I was obv really disappointed and also surprised because of the results of GP surgery test. To cut a very long story short and after several phone calls it transpires that the results of the GP test were not normal - my blood count was 110. When I went for the first op I was 120 (low end of normal) and when I was discharged I was 78. So the liquid iron had helped. I so wish I hadn't stopped taking the iron. The GP doesn't accept responsibilty yet and as said that my local blood laboratories accept 110 as normal. This is despite all the online information which shows 120 as the acceptable low end of normal for women and despite the fact that to have orthopaedic surgery you need to be at least 120. I am still pursuing this but I am not going to get my surgery for a while and my plans have gone awry.

Sorry for the long post, needed to get this 'off my chest'.
