    Hi Emma,

I would recommend a look at Grahams website.  You can pick and choose what you want to know from the index.

Posterior or anterior Approach. Difference in pain level and restrictions. How long in hospital and how much therapy? Stairs to climb and people to help you? Take the pain medicine and try to walk as much as you can safely after being told to do it. Don't fall after surgery and best of luck. A well worth operation

I agree with the fine line about knowing too much.  I didnt have any choices to make as I was just going to get whatever the surgeon decided on the day.  I was a bit angry that i didn't get a pre op appointment as I was an NHS patient sent to a private clinic.  He was an old school type who only did the posterior approach (I learned this 1h before the op). I had hoped for an anterior, but as I said no choice.  However I am 9 weeks in and doing great and the restrictions are relaxed and I am healing nicely and back at work so I suppose I can't complain.  If you knew too much I think you may just worry that you are not getting the treatment you wanted. If you get a chance to ask do ask about the type of approach and the type of prosthetic and if it will be cemented or not.  All of these impact on the length of recovery.

    Good luck!

Hi Emma, in my case the less I knew the better - I guess I'm a chicken! That's the way I went in and enjoyed the experience - it was actually like a holiday for me being waited on 24/7 .... no cooking to do! The only advice I can give you is don't be in any rush to get out of hospital and do participate in a structured physio program post op. I was in hospital 7 days and then 10 days rehab hospital followed by 4 weeks part time attending rehab. I had the anterior approach . Good luck ...
