I am 58 woman had right thr four  weeks ago, I'm managing walking on one crutch when out and mostly without in the house, however although my wound has healed nicely I'm still quite swollen on my right buttock and hip. I'm also experiencing a lot of stiffness in my knee and thigh . I'm doing my excercises but find it difficult with lifting my knee up. Anyone hit and ideas ?

    Hi Susie,

you are going great. The swelling will go down it takes time. I used ice on my hip for swelling. Also great just walking moving keeps the blood and oxygen flowing.

there is a leg lift that is like a dog leash without the dog at the end just a opening to put your foot in then with the long end of the other end in hand pull the leg up. Also I used ice on my knees.

It it takes time to heal thru major surgery. The bone grows on to the implant to stabalize the components. Soon you will have you full mobility back.

Peace & Healing sent your way!

Take your time . Don't over do. Each step is a giant hurdle to getting back mobility. Muscles and tendons have gone thru the mill.

Major surgery takes time and you lean all the do and don'ts very important to remember them when you are cleared to go back to work. PT will teach you much more healing and strengthening techniques.

wishing you healing and a good effective journey to a better quality of life.

By by the way a chef I could use you her ! Are you in the US. LOL,

    hi susie,

I agree with Hope in that you are doing great -

Swelling and warmth around the scar and in leg are common after a hip replacement operation. This represents the normal process of healing and can last for several weeks to months-

You are also learning to walk again and might have to use a walking aid for a little bit longer to avoid a sudden twist and fall.

To keep your body in balance is challenging -- you might not be aware of all the body parts involved though - and then you also want to move forward -

    hence, the stiffness -

I have a 4 wheels-walker (aka rollator) which really has helped me to keep my balance and posture straight ...

When you are using your cane, please make sure that you walk correctly - Have your PT watch you walk ...

You are really doing good ... please keep us posted -

    big warm hug

Four weeks isn't long so don't rush it. You will be stiff still keep up with the exercises walking etc

Regular paracetamol will help with the stiffness I find it's bad early morning and late evening. Don't forget to rest too as your body needs time to heal.

    You are doing well

I had a left Total Hi replacement on 2/2/2016. This was the biggest mistake of my life. I am in pain every day. I can't do the simplest of things. I did however fall down the stairs and hurt my leg even more. But the reason I fell down the stairs is because my leg gave way. X-rays showed that "everything is fine" but it's not. I don't know what to do anymore because my life has changed drastically because of this. Hip, knee replacements is not for everyone. Sorry to hear about your problems. Keep up the exercises to make your leg stronger. Go back to your doctor or get another doctor. Don't let it go...life is too short! Good luck...Grace

    Hi Susie,

It sounds as though you are right on track with your recovery.  Swelling is normal for the first several weeks, especially after a workout.  Remember that just walking around the house during the first few weeks is a workout.  Remember to use ice packs throughout the day.  This will help reduce inflamation and pain.

Stiffness is also normal at that stage because you have not been using those muscles as much as you did prior to the surgery.  It will take several weeks of PT to get those muscles working again properly.

Best of luck on your continued recoverysmile

Thanks all, saw pt yesterday and have a rubber band type thing to use now for resistance excercises, and do I know I've done them!!! It's been an eye opener being on here as I thought I would be back to normal in six weekssad will try to go back to work at a gradual two hours a day as I'm on my feet all day, going to try tomorrow. But I have to admit for someone that loves my job I won't be rushing back full time yet.

    Thanks for everyone's replies.
