Throat pain and lpr

I don't know what to do anymore. After 2 weeks on famotidine, the pain on my throat is still there. I have been on PPI's and they made my throat more sore. Famotidine decreased the pain but how long will it take to resolve the LPR symptoms completely? Help!

    Hi Shugirl,

I also experienced most of my reflux symptoms in my throat. The acid would inflame the tissue and constrict my esophagus. One treatment that helped was dilation of my esophagus during an upper endoscopy. I also recently had a nissen fundoplication to tighten the esophageal sphincter and prevent acid from refluxing into my throat. I am so sorry that your symptoms have such an impact on your quality of life. I hope you find just the right treatment to resolve your problems.

Did the nissen fundoplication help at all. I have fought this for 6 years and now I'm taking Dexilant and sucralfate which seems to help. My throat seems raw much of the time and I always feel like there's something in the back of my throat. I also have to keep clearing my throat especially when I'm laying down. When I wake up in the mornings its my throat that wakes me. Also I have this grulging in my throat when I swallow. I'm not giving up though but always open to suggestions. Crazy to me why an ENT hasn't gotten on here and given his or her opinion on some of these issues.

Yes, interested to know if your procedures helped you? Also, I'm having an endoscopy next month. Can I just ask for a dilation while they are doing it?

      Hi Mack,

The fundoplication has helped and I think it would even more so if I didn't keep indulging in things like coffee and beer. The recovery is challenging because of the restricted diet but you get past it. For anyone with throat symptoms who hasn't otherwise found relief, I would at least advise checking into it.

      Best of luck

      Hi Debbie,

Please see me reply to Mack about the surgery. Whenever I've had the dilation, it has always been done during an endoscopy. I would definitely ask your doctor about it beforehand.

      Best wishes

Lack of communication between Doctors- You need to ask them

and basically become your own case manager - Primaries are suppose to do this but they don't have the time because they overbook patients

just in case someone cancels.   I believe a computer can do a better job than a Doctor when it comes to evaluate your symptoms plus a computer can check the data with the other specialist and give you an accurate diagnostic and not just just what is directly related to them.  In the past becoming a Doctor was about helping people, now is how much $$$ they can make. Sure, their is always a few good Doctors left but you would have to move to another town to find them. ;-(

I took Famotidine for 2 weeks and had to stop it because it was increasing my anxiety so I changed to Ranitidine.  So far no PPI or H2 blocker has worked on me and I appear to have LPR as well.

I need to suggest this to my GI. Maybe it's also the med that is making me so desperate.

Thank you for your messages. It's comforting to know that I'm not alone in this. Have any of you tried the breathing exercise to strengthen the LES and the shaker exercise for UES? Does it work? I feel like I need to try every possible solution.

I have tried Deep breathing and actually took a course and it did take away my heavy dizziness all day long.  Actually, my anxiety was almost gone when reflux/gastritis showed up. ;-(  As for another questio you asked here, is to my believe you should first check if you actually have high acid or low acid before jumping to conclutions.  Their is a couple of test you can take for this and one is the PH Bravo done by a GI.  As for sucralfate, it's a very good medication without the damage from the PPI's, but it has not helped me just like any PPi or H2 blocker did not. Now they are going to run another test in 5 days to see if my esophagus is contracting and how my valve is working.  I jhave mild nerve damage on hands and feets ( no medication), and they believe this is the problem.
