ThrushVSCystitis/UTI

Posted , 3 users are following.

I have had recurrent cystitis for over a year and a half now. I used to get it after sex but before i started researching cystitis and what can prevent/cause the problem, i never knew you had to urinate after having sex and preferably shower before and after etc...So it would have helped if i knew that a couple of years ago but now i am stuck in a situation where i can't seem to get myself out of it...

I am ill practically every single day now since i started dating my boyfriend just over a year and a half ago. I can't work and struggle to do daily chores because of my symptoms and even fear leaving the house because i can't stand being around other people when i am like this as it makes me feel uncomfortable.

I have done some research and some people have said that Thrush (which i have had previously and still have because i don't think it was treated properly) can cause cystitis/bladder infections.

Has anyone had Thrush and found it to be the cause of their cystitis/ bladder infections? I am getting tested for it again but a more thorough check is going to be done in a couple of weeks time but i would like to know if this was the case for some people as i have a hospital appointment to get a scan to see if i am emptying my bladder properly and don't really want to drag myself down to the hospital when i feel the way i do when i could just wait another week and hopefully find the route cause then...

    Hi Emma2003,

I'm so sorry to hear that you have been so unwell.  I can identifty with you wholeheartedly as the same thing happened to me two years ago.  Fortunately after alot of trial and error - I think I may have got things under control.  I thought if I share my experience with you - you can take what you want from the advice.  I found that my condition was caused by an overly acidic system.  This causes thrush to thrive and uti's to be a regular occurance.  In order to get my acidic system under control I stopped drinking tea and coffee, drink filtered water (regularly), take lactobacillus (as it overwhelms candida - the thrush bacteria), follow a vegetarian diet, up your intake of green leafy vegetables and drink marshmallow root tea.   If you want to eat something naughty like steak or really rich stuff you can also take "pre relief" which is a tablet that strips the acid out of your food.

It's worth keeping a food diary as some foods can make symptoms worse.

By doing all of this, I have managed to stop the viscious cycle to stop - without the need to pump my system with drugs and antibiotics.

    I hope this helps :-)

Yeah i started a new discussion on this about wither people have went on an alkalise diet and if it helped and what food you can eat as i have looked online but some people are coming up with different answers, lol. I must admit i am a lazy drinkier, have never really drank enough water tbh but never had this problem until a few years back when it was only after having sex but now it occurs every day. I am starting to drink more gradually though but still wouldn't say it is helping in any way...What is lactobacillus?...I don't really want to be taking tablets a lot as i would rather try and find something that can cure this naturally or if needed a short course of antibiotics prescribed from the doctors. I must admit i do love my meat and stopping that would be really hard for me.

Thank you for replying and hope to hear from you soon smile

Hiya, again I sympathise.  When I started to really look into it I got conflicting advice.  What I forgot to mention in my previous reply was that everyone is different and you have to find what works for you.  Keeping hydrated is vital as the less urine is in the bladder, the more concentrated it will be, the more concentrated it is - the more it will irritate the bladder.  As I mentioned, there were lots of little changes I made to my diet.  Each one helped ease my symptoms a tiny bit - but when you put them all together they helped alot.  I hate taking antibiotics and doctors were no help.  Lactobacillus and acidophillus are probiotics that help to balance your internal flora and are perfectly safe.  People often take them when they are taking antibiotics as antibiotics kill all bacteria - good and bad - which isn't good for the good guys.  Having an overgrowth of candida (a naturally occuring bacteria that we need but when it overgrows it can cause real problems) can cause your system to be overly acidic - which makes your urine acidic, which irritates the bladder and makes you feel like you've got a permanent case of cystitis.  Not good.  A book that really helped me is called "Along The Healing Path" Recovering from Interstitial Cystitis by Catherine M Simone. Its a  brilliant book and she gives all kinds of remedies that you can try that are all natural.  I really dislike the theory that you go to the doctors, get given a pill and you hope that whatever you are suffering from will go away.  I want to know what I've got, how I got it, how to get rid of it and how to stop it coming back - and that means healing from within and taking a long hard look at your diet and lifestyle (and stress) and making the necessary changes.  If you love your meat you can take a product called "pre relief" which strips the acid from your food before it can cause a problem.  I take it when I'm feeling naughty and it really works!  I can't drink red wine as it really irritates my bladder but with a pre relief tablet I can enjoy it.  Both the book and product I've mentioned you can can get on Amazon. Marshallow tea was the final product that has really helped.  Since taking it I haven't had any symptoms atall (and I'm 5 weeks in).  It's a perfectl natural tea that you can buy from a good health shop.  Its best to buy it loose and you brew it like normal tea.  It tastes a bit like weak herbal gravy.  I really hope the advice I've given helps biggrin

      Hello,

I don't believe that water is a lot to do with it, either that or doctors have just left it for that long feeding me antibiotics instead of finding the route cause to my symptoms as i used to drink water when i felt one coming on and then i just flushed it out and that was it till next time i got irratated during intercourse but now i get it every day with it is a minor one or a really bad one. I am going to see my doctor a week tomorrow to get tested for thrush again as the doctor who previously tested me for it never really looked deep enough where as the doctor i seen when i got my smear done last week said that there was a lot of discharge inside of me and that it was even quite hard to find my cervic because of the build up of discharge which is obviously a sign of thrush so i am hoping (fingers crossed) that that will be the problem of my recurrent cystitis as it is said to be one of the problems for people who get recurrent cystitis and god knows how long i have had the thrush for...

I must admit i don't think my diet helps my either so i am going to buy the urine test strips out my local pharmacy or boots to test my urine to see if my body is acidic or not and if it is then i will have to watch what i eat more often and cut down on fats and sugars which i want to do anyways. I will definitely look for the book on Amazon though as i am always open to the opinions of others, likewise for the pro relief will definitely look into that as well so i am not completely cutting everything out of my diet, that is if my body is acidic. I have heard that Marshmallow tea does help so yet again it will definitely be something i will look into smile

Thank you for taking your time to reply smile

    hi Emma

wee after sex and get doc to prescribe an antibiotic after sex as a single dose will work

also get v v clean wash soap and water after bowel movement and wipe front to back

these are things I have found helpful

you get thrush because vaginal flora changes change the bacteria in vagina use a probiotic specific for the vagina

I always urinate after sex and i don't really want to be stuck on antibiotics if i can help it, short term ones i don't mind but i don't want to be taking antibiotics every time i have had sex especially when some can make thrush worse which can make this cycle keep spinning. I always wipe front to back and wash frequently.

This is very helpful information. Unfortunately for me i have had these symptoms for a while now so even though i do do all of the above i still get symptoms of cystitis and still get thrush because they old symtoms haven't been properly dealt with.

I will have a look at the link you sent me though and hopefully can find something that will help smile

try taking d-mannose after sex it clings to ecoli and wont cause thrush

Lactobacillus acidophilus is no good for the bladder/vagina it colonises only the gut and you can get from yoghurt

try lactobacillus rhamnous and lactobacillus reutei these inhabit the vagina and can pass into the bladder therebye outnumbering the bad bacteria and decrease infection and symptoms

Like i said to Donna i am open to the opinions of others so will definitely try the d-mannose as either i get thrush a lot or the thrush that was there before is still there, obviously because the canesten must not have been strong enough to clear it before. That sounds similar to the pro relief that Donna mentioned so will definitely give them both a look into and hopefully pick the right product that will help me but before i buy any of these products i am going to wait to hear back from what my doctor says and hopefully i will be prescribed something that will clear the thrush which will hopefully stop my recurrent cystitis.

      Thank you for replying smile

That maybe true but in my case Lactobacillus acidophilus worked.  In fact, not only did it work but I felt a huge improvement in my symptoms within an hour of taking the first capsule.  Baffling I know but that's my experience.

I would strongly advise looking at your diet and lifestlye too.  Taking thrush remedies only offers temporary relief.  If you don't get rid of the root cause - it will keep coming back.  Thrush/candida thrives on sugar and yeast so you might be able to help yourself further by watching what you eat for a while and see if that helps biggrin

But i will definitely get back to you and let you know if changing my diet helps me smile
