Thyroid Confusion - where to go next?

Posted , 3 users are following.

I'm brand new to this forum. I've just had some blood results for thyroid: TSH 4, T4 14.9, T3 3.8, Antibodies 754. Obviously I'm alarmed by the antibodies. I've spoken to my gp who says that this is out of her realm and that I should see a specialist. Do I have hashimotos? Is this something I should be treated for or are people with high antibody levels left until TSH levels increase so that they become hypothyroid anyway? I've had a few colds which have led to really nasty candida mouth infections, suffer each month with very heavy periods and feel tired alot. All in all I'm pretty fed up with it and would like to get to the bottom of it. Dietary wise I've recently made lots of changes such as cutting gluten as there are links between gluten and thyroid and I'm also working with a nutritionist with supplements etc. Any advice would be much appreciated. It seems like this thyroid malarchy is such a minefield - thank you

    Hi,

You need to see an endocrinologist! He or she will consult you and put a dignose and also give you medication. The immune system is getting weaker, metabolism slows down and there are a lot of symtoms. Try to look on the positive side, a good diet, keeping the weight under control, that you may find it will be a very hard task. I used to have periods like you, I am now menopausal. Also have an ultrasound on your thyroid gland to check for noduls. I have them and very soon I will have surgery to have my gland and the noduls removed. If you have a nutritionist is good as she can advise you on what you can or can not eat. Good Luck!

Thank you Daniela. I'm seeing gp next week so will speak to her about a referral to an endocrinologist as well as suggesting that she arranges a scan. Good luck to you too :-)

Hi, you should be referred to an endo specialist who will explain everything & advise you on what to do. It is definitely something you should be treated for. I was diagnosed with Graves Disease in January & have been taking Carbimazole and have 3 monthly checks with endo & 6 weekly blood tests. I was hyperthyroid to start with but on last visit to endo my blood test results show I've just swung into hypo, but like you have TRABS that are way too high. He said my results have been all over the place & not going to improve on Carbimazole, so he gave me two options -  RAI or thyroid removal. I think I'll opt for thyroid removal. Don't leave it too long to see an endo, you must get treatment or it can lead to all sorts of health problems. Good luck & let us know how you get on
