Thyroid Diagnosis

Hello folks - im new to this forum, so if i mess up how it's done, forgive me. Anyhow - for the past 2 years i've been poorly. For the last 6 months illness has progressively become worse. Having been tooing and frowing the doctors, yestarday i had the diagnosis of Auto immune attacked thryroid. I know nothing much about the illness. I've been given 50ml dosage of Levothyroxine to take daily. The question i have is this. For the best part of the last 6 months i have been unable to walk properly or without pain 80% (there abouts) of the time. I spend most of my time being asleep. Im in cronic pain with my joints (been tested for various arthritis, but nothing showing in tests) Is there any possibility the the pain and exhaustion are connected with the Thyroid issue? My doc said i should start to feel a little better soon, but seems perplexed by my exhaustion and chronic pain. I'd appreciate any views or experiences anyone has had or if you views are that my symptons do not fit with a Thyroid problem, please do say. Many thanks. Helen

    Hello Helen:

My name is Shelly and I am a nurse in the USA.  I have Hashimoto's thyroid disease since 1987.

In our bodies we have antibodies that get a wrong signal and attack our thyroid gland.  This is what autoimmune (Hashimoto's ) is.

Some ways thyroid disease happens is:

1.Exposure to a virus called Epstein-Barr or MONO. It can cause the antibodies to attack.

    2. Poor iodine in the diet  (mostly seen in 3rd world countries)

    3. Lupus, Cancer and Chemo bother the gland.

    4. Family Trait in your DNA.

So along with all of the feeling tired, muscle aches, brittle nails, dry skin, weight gain etc...this all goes along with being low in thyroid hormone.

It takes 6 to 12 weeks to feel the symptoms fade.  Keep a log and do not be surprised if you end up having the dose made higher.  Doc's start low and then do blood again in a few months.

Have a VIT D level done, many of us have low D and it can lead to severe muscle aches.  I take 2000IU a day.

B-12 level check as well as a mineral panel, potassium, calcium, selenium, ferritin, iron, magnesium. If B-12 is low you will be very tired.  Also a CBC, (Complete blood count) and WBC (White Blood count) test.

So keep us posted and take your Levo without food and wait 1 hour before eating.

Food will block it from working.

    Any questions, just ask.

    Regards,

    Shelly
