Thyroid Sufferer

Hi- I'm Alyssa and I'm in the US.  I've been dealing with the constant battle as a hypo/hyperthyroid patient since 2004.  I received a partial kill and placed on Levothyroxine.  I have since gone mad!  Not literally but it's been a difficult time for me.

My hair has never grown back the way it was before, my nails only grow when I take supplements and I am menopausal already!  I've been going through hot flashes and night sweats for months, I suffer from an incredible astigmatism, causing all sorts of dry eyes and such.  I am still fighting to lose the weight I've gained and I feel as though I'm Bipolar!

Anybody else experiencing anything close?  There's more but I don't want to go on and on.  smile

I read just part of Suzanne Summers book about hormones etc.. One of the best basic ideas in her book was that, adjatation, night sweats, loosing hair, brittle nails and dry skin are all side affects that we do not have to go thru! These are actual signs that something, hormones usually, are not at the right level in our system, thus giving off signals to  find help to get these hormone levels right, and she shows you how, we can regulate these till however long we want! Even if we live to be 90 years old. The endocrine system is a chain work of helping each gland in order. Finding a doctor who knows this works well. A lot of times it seems like when TSH blood levels look good, in a given time they might turn up bad in another blood test, maybe beyond the T-3 and T-4 blood tests, maybe further blood work to look deeper in your  hormones. So I believe in past experiences that the Levothyroxine, Synthroid, and Armour are the first choices to help, and in this case, generic meds cause a lot of bad side effects. Ask your  doctor for Armour and see if that helps. These side effects of night sweats ect is your body telling you this is not what  your body needs. Maybe it is fighting back!. Good luck!

I live in the UK. These drs over here willl not prescibe Amour,  has far as I'm aware they used to precribe them up until the 70s..... maybe it has something to do with cost?

Just over 15 months my dr said, I was hyperthyroid (borderline 4.9) he put me on Levothyroxine.  Has the months passed I noticed my face bloating, gaining more weight, palpertations, and just genarally feeling unwell (I might add, at the time i was also on Ellestte HRT)

My BP began to rise  I was then taken off the HRT.  At this point my dr decided to up my dose of Levo to 100mg (started off on 50mg) I began to feel terrible!  so, I took myself off these Levo tablets and stright away I felt much better.  Now, I'm not saying, for ppl to start doing this, I was BOARDERLINE and I couldnt of done that if the result levels had been a lot higher.

After having being off the Levo for about 6wks my hair started coing out in clumps both from the root and shedding around the sides (My hair did come out when I was on the Levo, but not much) I demanded to see a Endo specialist.   She was quite taken back by my results for the hypothyroidism has they were normal!!

Has of today,  I have lost half my hair but, it has now stopped falling out (I think this was due to the medication coming out of my system?)  The Endo says, I have now euthyroid with slightly raised TPO antibodies...Thyroid Function Tests

Free T4 14.4    TSH 3.1 Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody (TPO) 61.

Also Newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes HbA1c 59 mmol/mol.........Yes I am overweigh but, I eat healthy all organic food I don't drink and I stopped smoking over 2 years ago......Since Febuaray I started back swimming 3-4 times a wk and I do over 150 lenghs front crawl (which takes some doing when your 52) I have told the dr, I want to try weigh management first before going on tablets for diabetes..

vitamin D is 53......corrected calcium 2.36......ALT53, Ferritin 153,....My endo does not do the reverse t3 test.....Hope this is helpful to anyone. oh, by the way I am now starting to lose weight with all the swimming!  And generally, I FEEL OK , apart from the menopause and I take Black Cohosh for that which helps me sleep well.....

Thank you Amanda!  I have heard the Black Cohosh helps- I'm going to try that.  Right now, I get anywhere from 2.5 to 4.5 hours of sleep a day.  amay would think that great, but I really do need more!

When my hair came out, I thought it would return, but it's now been years and I'm like a guy with a receeding hairline.  My hair is so thin on top and on the sides, but from the crown back I'm full of hair.  It's so disturbing for me, I wear wigs all the time.  I buy the good ones, so I don't look ridiculous but it can be uncomfortble from time to time.

Since September, I've lost about 50 pounds, but my BP hasn't lowered at all.  I was placed on a low-dose of Hydrochlorothiazide and it's not helped.  My GP recently retired, so I'm waiting until July 30 to see my new GP and possibly get my med changed.  I feel like I'm going insane!

I know it's mostly my thyroid with the anxiety, but lately I've felt a few of the palpatatios again... ugh!  I'm hoping the Black Cohosh will help with that too.  So much is going on that I don't know what's what these days.  It could be from the Levo or the menopause- I'm doomed regardless of where I turn!

I moved into a house so I can't so swimming every day like I used too.  I miss that.  Now I'm in the country, so pools aren't available like in the city.  I am gettig a bike though and my treadmill s being repaired so I can stop spending a small fortune at the gym.

      Thank you for sharing.  Cheers!

      Hi Amanda,

Glad the swimming is helping, I too have just started swimming. Try and stay off as much medication as possible as they cause such side effects.Re your Diabetes I believe you can reverse this and going low carb is what works (not just the sugary ones but other starchy foods) contrary to popular belief. Go well

Hey lass, be positive you live in the US there is a lot more help out there than here in the Uk. See a functional practioner - they look at the whole of you and can also prescribe natural thyroid (unlike in the Uk), Check out the Thyroid summit I have just listened to online with world experts talking about what is really going on.

    I wish you well
