TIA 1 week ago

Hi, I've joined today to  glean information from other patients on the after effects of a TIA.

As the title says I had my stroke a week ago and new straight away that it was a stroke as my face dropped down the left had side, speach wasn't audible and I couldn't  move that side of my body

It only lasted 10-15 minutes but was very scary at the time. I was treated at hospital and managed to see someone at the TIA clinic the same day.

I still  sway to one side at odd times but this morning I came downstairs and started to loose the sensation in my fingers and lips, they are much better now but it made me wonder if it is a sign of another attack!

Can anyone ease my mind that I don't have to concider going off to the hospital

Thank you Sue

Hello,Sue,I am sorry to hear about your stroke/Tia I had a stroke in the late 1990s and have since had a number of Tia's.At first I went to the Doctor who put me in hospital but I found I was ok after a short time but they still kept me in to change the medication I was on.I stopped going to the Doctor after that because I thought I could get better by resting in my own bed.Up to now it has worked for me although it is more of a risk because I now live on my own.I think they do say that a full blown stroke can follow a Tia so it may be better for you to see the Doctor about it.I know I have been lucky up to now but I hate hospitals, maybe one day I may not be lucky but I will be 75 on my next birthday so I have done quite well doing it my way.In your case the stroke is still new so you would be better seeing the Doctor.I hope you will get well soon.Kind regards,Reg

      Hi Reg

I have been doing nothing but sleep since last week as I'm always tired.Luckly my husband and son are at hand to deal with the house dutys. wink

I have an appointment to see my GP on Wednesday, I'm just hoping he will have the information from the hospital by then on my new tablets; and I will definitely mention the numb feelings I have been getting.

    Hi Sue...

Unfortunately TIA's are signs of a full blown stroke within hours to several months, well so Doctors and research say. If any of your symptoms worsen you need to get to hospital quickly, most preferably via Ambulance. TIA's are mini strokes and you can have several before the real deal occurs,In other words a TIA is a warning of an impending stroke if  medical intervention isn't obtained .

      Thanks Samuel,

At the moment I'm watching out for sign's all the time, I'm a full time carer for my son and its worrying that I have to more or less keep looking over my shoulder in case I have another TIA  I'm hoping that this will ease off a bit as time goes on.

Sue, I would recommend you go to ER only because I being a suffering patient of TIA have residual damage. The unbalance, the partial face numbness and so many other signs should be taken very seriously. I do not believe in Mini Strokes. A stroke is a stroke. Please seek medical attention. My tia was in November and I still drool fron the right side of my lip. They can be very serious. Let me know how your doing. Julie

I was told by the Stroke Consultant they differentiate a TIA from a Stroke as follows:-

A Stroke occurs when a clot lodges in the brain and either leaks into the brain or damages brain tissue and causes that part of the brain to die. It leaves a scar which can be clearly seen on an MRI. I was fortunate? to have that explained to me whilst looking at the MRI results on a Computer screen.

A TIA occurs when a clot passes across the brain and is dispersed without intervention. It causes momentary problems but soon passes.

Since my main stroke, I have had around 4 TIA's despite taking Warfarin to thin the blood. I am on Warfarin now for life. There are alternatives, but unfortunately I cannot take them. They tried swapping me, but I had TIA's when my blood INR dropped below the required level.
