Tight band feeling after one year out

Hello,  I am one year out from my tkr.   I am still having the tight band feeling across and under my knee.  It seems to have gotten slightly better.  Has any one experienced this same feeling so far out, and when or did it go away?  My surgeon said it will get better, but it is still there.  There has not been a day that has gone by that I am not aware of my knees.  Do you ever get to the place where you never notice your replacements?  Thanks for any inmput.

I had the tight band feeling for about 8 months. After almost a year, it is gone and I have no clue when it disappeared. In fact, I had forgotten about it. Like they say, you dont miss a toothache. Hang in there. Be glad you have new knees. Imagine if you hadn't... you'd be hobbling around worse than before.

I had my TKR in Nov 2017 and I can feel it all the time but it's ok because it's 100% better than before i think it's normal its man made material replacing or original I still feel the difference with my back after spinal surgery 30 years ago nuts bolts and rodes with fusion holding things together but the other day I started to have pain in my knee coming down the stairs never had before I am wondering is it because of the heat and humidity, sleeping under the air condition, or weight Hope things get better

I have a tight band in the front of my knee, replaced April 2017.   It seems to be gradually fading.  I was putting vit.E oil on it after baths.  But when I put on moisturizing cream recently, it seemed to help more.

Girl, I know exactly what you're talking about.  Im 5 mths po, and still hurt and have the band feeling.  Went to ortho yesterday, an he said it could take upto a year, or even two years to get better.  Funny thing is, he NEVER said that when he was telling me about the surgery, before the surgery.  Now, he doesn't want to see me until Jan, for the year check up.  I said, Yeah, but your number is on speed dial.  I know he rues the day he ever saw me walk in his office.   If I didn't ice 3/4 of the day, I would be in misery.  I feel for both of us.....

In some ways I was glad to read your message as I'm 4 mths out from Tkr. I still hurt and knee is very tight and I think the % bend is worse now than a month ago. Struggling to exercise cos it hurts so it's catch 22. Reduced pain relief to 1 a day but not sure it's enough. Reluctant to go back as not sure what anyone could do

    Hi patty

I'm almost 2 years post TKR and I still get niggles of pain now and again i don't think you can forget about the knee I just look at it as I can do so much more than I could before my op just remember how it was before life should be a lot easier.

Yeah...somewhat common.  Docs say it can last around 18 months.  Use some Voltaren Gel (RX in the US, generic diclofenac elsewhere).  Anti-inflammatory and pain reliever...helps a lot.  The biggest issue is your activity level.  By now, you should have done all the gym work (not PT) to rebuild your dead quads, glutes and core.  This also helps with keeping the knee active and loose.  Even long-standing TKR veterans will tell you that the knee will stiffen up if not kept active.  Gotta do the rebuild and keep up some activity.  What?  No one told you that this is a lifelong recovery?  Really?

Hi patty,I’m eight months on and still have a tight band feeling and I don’t think you’ll can ever forget you have an artificial knee things like kneeling down or missing a step or turning sharply are always on your mind when your doing everyday things but on the plus side I can do so much more now I’ve had my replacement and pretty well pain free too.in my case yes I’m aware of the knee and always will be but I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

    Hi patty,

Two answers from me ….. 1) I am now 2 years 8 months from my right knee, partial knee replacement, medial compartment -I still have the 'tight band feeling' - no sweat, it gets better each year - but - very slowly. 2) I only notice my partial when I kneel on that knee or when there is a change in the weather coming.

Apart from that I am not really aware of it.

I am mostly aware of my knee after 7 years , I’m hoping my recent op on other knee will be better . The first one is fine , can’t say it hurts but I it’s never like a natural one , I forget about it but some days it aches

It will go away. Your leg/knee area goes thru all kinds of numbness spots & that tight band feeling. I had 2 TKR’s

    Hi Patty,

I am now 4.5 months from TKR and recognize for some reason I have been blessed with an extremely high pain tolerance and quick healing.  Thank God because even saying that sometimes it’s a challenge. I use Voltaren gel and it helps. Nerve endings take a long, long time to heal so I had to learn patience. Occasionally I have strong tingling and tightness but getting less often. I do a lot of exercises. Check the ones Chico recommends for rebuilding the muscles. My sweet hubby massages my leg from mid thigh to lower calf and it helps a LOT. My doctor continues to stress this is a lifetime goal and to be patient. Hang in there and continue to do the exercises. You got this
