Tight chest after a cold (Adult asthma)

I'm 58 and relatively new to dealing with Asthma, (only diagnosed under 2 years ago). I'm now on 2x 125ug Seretide twice daily which is ok most of the time to manage the asthma symptoms. Unfortunately I get colds fairly regularly, and after any cold nearly always experience a tight chest, that leaves me very uncomfortable for several days. Should I be looking for some additional medication?...as Ceretide is a combination of steroid plus long acting b-agonist. I'm advised you can't up the dose on Seretide to deal with short term issues...what should I do to relieve the discomfort?

I am lesline jones i would like to share some thing about this - people who are having harmful thing`s such as tobacco smoke, mold, dust, feather beds, or perfume to chance of increse the asthma problem. Irritants that bring on asthma symptoms are called "asthma triggers."

I'd suggest you go back to your GP - you may need to be prescibed a reliever like Ventolin, if you're not on it already of course. Otherwise, check to see if you're experiencing any allergies, like early onset hay fever or a dust mite allergy, this can make it worse. I'd also recommend changing from feather pillows and duvets, wash the bedding at 60 degrees and try damp dusting around the house to control dust mite. I've been doing this for a long time and it really helps with my asthma.

Thanks for those replies, I'm not atopic, i.e I don't have asthma that is triggered by allergies or hay fever etc. My only triggers are exercise or a chest infection following a cold. What's really bothering me is that my resistance to colds seems less, if I take any form of exertive exercise, I seem to be very susceptible to a combination of a tight chest afterwards for up to 7-10days, with the increased likelyhood that I'll go down with a cold with additional asthma repurcussions. Has anyone suceeded in dealing with this, so you can continue to exercise without the side effects described above.

Try taking echinacea (check with your GP first of course), as this can help to prevent colds. You may benefit from breathing exercises, perhaps your GP could refer you for further investigations.
