Tightness

Hi, I started with hemorrhoids, then ended up with a fissure. It's been going on for over 2 years. I've been to a colorectal surgeon who prescribed some cream which has nitroglycerin in it. Doesn't that sound nice? The idea is it will help alleviate the tightness in my rectum/anus. It isn't working. I take a stool softener to help prevent anything getting too hard but my BM are still torturous due to tightness. It takes 3-4 bathroom trips to get it all out and even then it feels like I haven't completely cleared out. Has anyone else had this? Any suggestions?

Hi Kathy, I know exactly what you are going through. I was told 20 years ago that I needed a stretch when I had my first colonoscopy but the surgeon at the time warned me that there was a very small chance that I could be left incontinent so it was a no brainer, I declined that procedure. I've spent the last 20 years taking laxatives about twice a week and it's not been a major problem. However I was told 3 months ago that I had a fissure when I had a couple of pre-cancerous polyps removed. The surgeon said I could have botox for the fissure and made it sound like having a flu jab. So now I can only say what I can advise you not to have and that is botox! What I wasn't told was that I could become incontinent until the botox wears off. I had it done 3 months ago and there is no sign of it wearing off yet. The surgeon said it would take 3-6 months to wear off. Some people have so much pain with fissures that they feel they have to try anything, but I wasn't in pain. Good luck. Oh and btw, GTN is supposed to be similar in effect to botox, I wish I'd stuck to the GTN!

Sue thank you for sharing this information. I have heard there is a risk of fecal incontinence so am scared to have the procedure. I guess I'll have to live with what I have.
