Tingling

Hi I am 12 days post op and experiencing strong tingling around my knee cap. I am assuming that this is part of the healing process. Just wondered if others experienced the same thing in their healing journey.

Also how long does this sensation of a tight band feeling last for.

I know that it is early days for me.

Hi Christine, I think the tingling is probably nerves around the knee cap area.  Unfortunately the tight band can last severeal weeks, mine seemed to go at 12 weeks - 15 weeks depending on how much walking I did.   You can overdo it and then its a case of icing and elevating.  Now 24 weks PO and feeling great.   75 years young.

Absolutely normal...I said it was like the melting of the polar ice caps as feeling comes back to the nerves that were impacted by thr surgery. That specific sensation lasted - for me - about 2 weeks but it still feels weird in other ways and no doubt will do for quite some time.

Thanks for your swift reply Donna it is good to be able to discuss these issues with others who have bee through the same operation.

How many weeks is it since your surgery

it's been 8 weeks .... slow on the bend and slow on getting strength back in that quadricep .... but moving in the right direction. I was at the surgeon's this morning and I will be going in for an MUA in the next week or two to fix the non-bending issue. The knee feels more 'floaty' if that makes sense - sometimes like it not quite connected to anything - but it does hold me up and that's what's important ... just a bit disconcerting with that disconnected feeling ..... smile

    Hi Christine

I don't remember tingling with either of my TKRs, to be honest, but you'll get all different sensations for quite a long time.  The tight band is very normal, as is numbness on the outside of the knee...both will also last some time.  You will also get swelling when you've been exercising...and aches and pains elsewhere in your legs...all very normal.

I wish you all the best.

i do remember that its pretty normal for us tkr its just everything settling down as i call it even when you bend the knee after it starts tingling its movement and probably its the start of scar tissue stretching i think its a good sign it means the new knee is making the tissues stretch and preventing the scar tissue taking hold if you know what i mean the tight band will last for a bit im afraid everything is so raw inside and all the layers that were sown up and then those awful clips its no wonder thr knee is tight good luck to you ,this seems all is well with you so glad for you

Thanks for your reply. I am counting the hours until Friday when clips will be taken out and the dressing removed. It is so tight and uncomfortable. I am thinking of resorting to a glass of wine tonight but not sure if I should drink because I am still using Clexane

      Hi Christine

You said you are having staples taken out on Friday. I suggest you take two pain meds about 15 minutes ahaead of time. It is unpleasant but it doesnot take too long to have them removed and the stretching and pulling will feel so

      Much better

I second that... the skin is hyper sensitive...had I known (but my inside sources lied about the staple experience) I certainly would have taken some beforehand. doesn't 'kill' but unpleasant and since I had 35 of the suckers .... LOL

a glass of wine would do you no harm its like your going out on the lash as we say here (thats when you go out for alot of drink )  you could make a spritzer of it with half wine half 7up it would help you unwind and lets face it your just going to bed afterwards go for it cheesygrin

Thanks for your reply. I did have a small glass of wine last night but paid dearly for it this morning when I woke with a splitting headache. It was not a good start to the day!

Made the morning exercises even harder.

ya i do think wine of all drinks dose give a hangover thats why i make a spitzer of it  now if i want a drink at home i go for barcadi and plenty coka cola in it

Hold off on the wine for a bit. Meds, wine and recent surgery...not a good mix.(Yes, I know from my BAD EXPERIENCE!

I have tingling different places at different times. I am 7 weeks post op.

I also get this circular tickle that feels like a small train on tracks going around INSIDE my leg under the skin.

Different parts appear to heal differently at different times. You seem right on track.

Best wishes for a solid recovery and minimal or better yet NO PAIN!

All perfectly normal at this stage,im 7 weeks post op and my knee still feels tight and swollen, because of course the more exercise and walking you do the more it swells...just keep up the good work your doing, and you will see a big change between 6 and 8 weeks x

Thanks Lou it sounds as if you are doing well. Are you still using crutches and what sort of distances are you walking now.

Im now walking without sticks, but everyones different,i do 2 30 minute walks a day,and  some bending exercises, stairs i can do now one foot after the other..but 2 weeks ago i couldnt do them so it goes to show what a couple of weeks can do...just takeit slow and easy these early weeks and you will reap the rewards..x
