Tingling/pain in thigh, side of leg and shin?

Hello Hippies.

Thanks to some really good replies to my previous post and members other posts I goggle some information.

It seems that our IT BAND goes from our hip down outer side of leg, crosses over the knee and then down the shin. Overuse, particularly with repetitive movement, causes tingling along these areas. If we ignore and continue doing too much then it tightens and gets inflamed and becomes really painful for which the only solution is 3 weeks of rest, ice, elevation and simple stretch exercises.

This explains a lot to me. As I've been feeling so good I've been hoeing weeds and other various jobs at allotment. Going to take it easier and yes it does suguest doing stretches to help build the strength in the ITband.

Thought this may be of interest to some of you.

I'm battling this myself. Physical therapy has me using a foam roller over the area a few times a day.

      Hi Sandy

Yes I read that foam roller is good for sorting this out. I've used one in the past as I used to do heavy weightlifting and got DOMS the next day. Hurts like hell to do but very beneficial. Hope your pain subsides soon x

Treat it kindly. I have this and waited until it was very painful to see doctor. Every time I stood up there was pain for awhile until I got pressure on it for a couple minutes. My first symptom was my ankle swelling twice it's size for one day. That one even puzzled my doctor as I do not normally swell much. Sandra is right about where the IT band runs. If your hip and glutimous Maximus muscles are too weak it puts strain on the IT band. If you know your muscles are still weak and you start to have pain on the side of your thigh or on the side of close to your knee, treat it right away with rest, icing and Ibuprophen. You might not get it as inflamed as mine was. I am on 3 weeks of rest and icing and it will be up Monday. The pain has subsided quite a bit, but is not totally gone. Since this ended up being more painful then right after surgery, I am going to take everything real slow for awhile. Hope to get some pool time in, just treading water and light exercise. My focus has changed from getting back to normal quickly to slow and steady. No long walks until those muscles strengthen. I have many light exercises to do. I think all will be well if I just go slow. This set me back so please heed if you start getting this sort of pain. Rest, icing and Ibuprophen (anti-inflammatories) right away and you might keep it from the extreme pain I got. Stretching and clamshells in bed are good too. My hip feels fine, it is not tight or painful and moves as it should. It basically feels like my own hip but stronger, but this IT band was difficult and you must get it under control as soon as possible. I read one woman struggling with it for two years. I would rather take a 3 week setback and go slow and steady from here out. Personally I did a lot of walking the preceding weekend to this. I felt fine and walked through 3 large stores shopping and went up and down my daughter's stairs twice, my first time doing stairs and did a full set with no handrail, just a wall I couldn't really hole onto because it had photos on it. These were not extreme activities, I think I just did too many in 2 days time. My hip muscles simply were not strong enough to endure it and I got an inflamed IT band. I sure wish I had known about it beforehand so please everyone be aware! I was about 10 or 11 weeks post op when it occurred and felt elated with my hip replacement. Had pain for about 3 days after surgery, used walker the recommended 2 weeks then went to a cane. I had quit using the cane in my home and walking next door to my neighbors and even out to dinner one night. I was still using it however most times I went out as I needed it for curbs and steps. Honestly I should have used it longer as now I am back to using it full time. I got a complete lesson about IT Band syndrome from my doctor and physical therapist. Don't stop your aids early, it is not a race, you will have less problems and a better gait if you use them longer. I forgot to mention, buy KT tape. I like the 8" precut type. It's on Amazon in a flesh color. If you run a piece of the tape from outer edge of knee up your hipline over where you might feel soreness it really is very helpful, much more then I thought it would do. Mine stays on even with daily showering for 4 or 5 days.

Remember everyone this IT band thing can become chronic, catch it at the beginning. The KT tape info came from my physical therapist. The tape may even help you from getting this. If I could do it over I would have used the KT tape at the very first sign. I would have taken a couple of days of rest at the first sign, I would have iced the sore area and I would have taken an anti-inflammatory (Ibuprophen). I'm guessing it might not have progressed if I had that info. I may have only lost a couple of days instead of 3 weeks progress and saved a lot of pain. I was very grateful I has not used hardly any of my pain pills as I needed them for this! When I started back to doing things, no longer walking for awhile, gentle exercises and ice after activities in that IT band area. Any soreness and I would have taken over the counter anti-inflammatories. I am almost to that point so will have to see how it goes. I see my doctor next Wednesday and hopefully he will advise me. I do NOT want this to become chronic. I was doing great before it. I will listen to my doctor and will go slow and steady. If I can prevent one of you dear hippies from getting this as bad as I did, all my posting will be worthwhile. I hurt so bad I thought I was crippled for life. Finally I am seeing light at the end of the tunnel. I will take care of myself and go slow from here on out.

Good luck to each and every one of you 😁

Thank you very much Peggy. This is very informative and hopefully people will read it. It was on one of your replies to someone's posteoarthritis I realised. I also feel strongly that a lot of posts about pain in these areas are connected to the ITband. Thigh, outer side of leg down to knee, knee itself and shin.

I am going to work on strengthening my hip and glutes with gentle stretching and 2 most important things......be kind to myself and take my time to heal.

I am sorry you have been through so much pain but hope this will be over soon and that now with this information it will not become chronic.

Thank you again, your advice is priceless to all us hippies xx

Maybe if it will let me cut and paste, I should put it as a new discussion so more people will see it?

It is KT tape. Please look on Amazon for it. I bought the pre-cut 8" strips in a roll. Physical therapist use it all the time, it gives added support to a muscle. I think it stands for Kinectic or something close but if you look up KT tape, you will find it. I got the nude color with the little design in it to show how much to stretch it. Do not stretch the ends however, 1 to 2" that way it will stay on longer. It is waterproof. It really is very helpful but you follow the muscle with it.

Sandra, it would not let me cut and paste from my iPad, I will try to rewrite it this weekend, tired of typing right now, but yes, I do want me fellow hippies aware of it. If they know the signs, they can tend to it right away. I waited until my doctor appt. a week later, my doctor and physical therapist are in the same building so talked to him after the doctor. It hurt so bad, I was basically resting but did not know the other things to do for it. I had knee replacement on the same leg in the summer of 2016, so even thought it might be from that, although the knee replacement was doing fine before my hip replacement. I did later read that 1 out of 8 hip replacements will get the IT Band syndrome issue to some degree. That is why I was surprised I had not heard of it before. Knowing would have been helpful....

Peggy I agree. It is one of the complications I can see now after reading up on it but it was never mentioned. Just a few days after my op I had really bad swelling at outer side of leg just above knee and it so really sore. Now I realise it was this. It says that mostly it appears a few months after op. I assume it's because we're feeling good so start to do more. My actual hip is fine as is my walking gait. Only problem I'm having is with my muscles and ITband. Thankfully it's not really painful just sore. A few years ago I was doing heavy weightlifting and we had to rest completely the day after lifting to give muscles time to get strong. There was a saying.....muscles worked in the gym, fed in the kitchen and get stronger in bed. Anyway good luck with the remainder of your recovery x

Thank you for the support Sandra.  I am going to try to get this reposted in New Discussions under IT Band Syndrome.

Sandra I got it posted under New Discussion in Hip Replacement and Titled it "IT Band Syndrome"  I hope it helps someone and we can always refer them to it.  I used your description of where the IT band runs, hope that is okay.
