Tinnitus made worse by taking Nortriptyline

Posted , 5 users are following.

My ear specialist put me on 25mg daily of Nortriptyline because diuretics helped to decrease my ear fullness, but my ear ringing and hearing had not improved after one month on diuretics.

Now after a week on Nortriptyline it  is like the ringing is  even louder in my affected ear.  Have any of you experienced this?

Also, I have read Ativan can help to calm Tinnitus.  Does anyone have a good or bad experience with it?

Ativan and Xanax definitely help during an attack.

Nortryptiline is an antidepressant, I have read that it has some success in treating tinnitis but do not know at what dosage it would be most effective. I don't think ativan would be doing that either. It also has a problem with easily becoming addicted so I would not want to use it as a routine, just as something to help you through an attack. There is an herb called ginko biloba that is supposed to increase blood flow to microcirculation (capillary blood flow). I haven't found any reasearch that backs up whether there is any reliability in this claim. There are special hearing aids that use background noise to help suppress tinnitis and help your brain learn to ignore the impulses. I had tinnitis for at least ten years before being diagnosed with menieres and it seems that alot rides on your attitude about tinnitis. Once I knew where it was coming from and why, I just ignored it as background noise. Maybe you need a bigger dose of nortryptiline or it may not work for you and you might want to investigate other options. The Mayo clinic and the American Tinnitis Association have some info on their sites you may want to read.

I can't take prescription Diuretics. Made me worse. My Doctor told me I was allergic. So I take a natural Diuretic called Dandelion. I also take Pine Bark to improve circulation in my inner ear. Been on for 4 months and it's a world of difference. Fullness and ringing is down. I hear a little better but my ear is really bad. I don't think I can get hearing completely back. If that doesn't help there are other things to try. Just keep searching until you find what will help you. Google Pine Bark and read the info.
