TINNITUS RELIEF

I have suffered from Tinnitus for many years (15). It started with an intermittent rumbling sound in my ear, which got increasingly worse in terms of the volume of the noise in my ear and also the frequency/length of the sound. I found it very difficult to describe the sound, as was not high pitched, but rather grumbling like a distant pneumatic drill, or a running car engine. At night and early morning it was particularly bad and when at its worse made me want to lie down as it made me feel sick and unbalanced. One doctor suggested it might be menieres disease, gave me some betahistamines, but these gave me terrible headaches as well as not stopping the noise. I became quite depressed, perhaps as a by product of this, although I have always suffered from degrees of anxiety (the tinnitus much worse when anxious). I went to the doctors explaining I was depressed and did not mention my tinnitus (I think I had given up thinking it could get better). he prescibed me some citalopram (an antidepressant - 10mg and then up to 20mg). Almost instantly my tinnitus disappeared and has not been back since I started taking this medicine 6 months agp. It might be worth other sufferers giving this a try, as for me seems to have cured the problem.

I've had mild tinnitus for a couple of months and tried taking a citalopram after reading your post but it didn't help me.

Thanks anyway and good luck with your stuff though.

Hi I think that some anti depressants can make things worse, I have just started taking Venlafaxine an anti depressant and it has made my tinitus a lot worse, and I can feel a pressure biuld up also, It has affected the volume in the left ear,  Its driving me crazy.  I have had the tinitus about 12 months the start of it was just after a heart attack, I have been very depressed, but I am sure that the meds are causing some of the problem with my tinitus.. has anybody else had a smilar experience with venlafaxine etc?

I'm suffering from tinnitus from 40 days now and its frequency keeps changing. My first ENT prescribed me tinnicar which helped to subside tinnitus but it would eventually return within 24 hours of stopping the medicine. Then my second ENT after wasting a lot of time on useless MRI's, blood tests, hearing tests (for the second time), suggesting low-sodium diets, finally prescribed me Ginko Biloba (40 mg) for 15 days to be taken before bed time. I won't say that it has worked wonders but it has definitely controlled my tinnitus upto a great extent. I have another 1 week to go before my dose gets over, after that i'll be able to assess whether it did anything to make tinnitus go away for good or whether it was just a blunt arrow but still I thought it may be woth sharing hence sharing it.
