Tired of knee pain and swelling

Posted , 5 users are following.

I have had 6 left knee surgeries. A full fulkerson, scopes and total kneecap replacement in April. I'm still in pain, swelling, grinding, popping and stiffness. My orthopedic surgeon is still following me closely and is aware of all of this. I was told to stop physical therapy because the pain was unbearable and was told to only do what I can. The pain wakes me up all night long! My knee gives out on me quite a bit and I'm just so discouraged. I think my drs is just as disappointed as I'm? I'm 41 and feel like my life is limited. The more I live around the more the swelling and pain. I have nerve damage in my knee and I can't feel parts of it. I don't even shave my knee. Is this a common Part of a kneecap replacement or is there other options? I just want to live a day pain free and no complications. Also a goods night rest would be nice. Thanks for any and all help.

Sounds like it may be time for a second opinion

I called about a second opinion and they said you have to 1 year out from your surgery date. That is not good. I also wander why I have the bruising going down my shin bone? It just doesn't make any sense?

Hi Tina I know what you are going through...I'm 5 weeks post op left tkr and feed up too. Every one who has had a tkr that I know says to hang in there it gets better. Yes...but when? As my swelling goes down the more clicks etc I can hear which has put me into a state of anxiety. Although my patella wasn't replaced I seem to have a lot of pain in that area when flexing my leg . I hope all will go a bit easier for you as time goes by.

Lesley, I'm sorry you are going through this. I'm out 7 months from my surgery. I don't think I'm gonna get better? It's very discouraging and I feel like my Dr listens to me but I also feel like is there any hope left to recovery? Is this my last choice to fix my issues? The patella femoral surgery helped a lot on both of my legs. The right knee is doing well. My first de didn't listen to me about my issues. He blamed it on my back issues and the way I walked. So I went and seen a back specialist and got injections. My knee didn't get no better. Fell down a flight of stairs 3 times. Leg would just give out. Got that second opinion and he said it sounded a little bizarre but did a scope. Low and behold my kneecap was wore out! I just wish this would get better! Tired of pain, surgeries and injections. I see my ortho Dr on Wednesday and will discuss again the issues. It's just depressing and I wish I had a better outcome than what I did! Thank you and I hope you have a speedy recovery. It's a journey and please remain positive. That's all we can do for now.

Hey Tina, I'm 8 months po. I have excruciating pain down along my inner thigh and back of thigh by day's end .  Suppose to see surgeon in December. Last visit he said I fell into the 20% group of people with not such a great result. I can straighten leg however bend is only at about 100.  At this point I'm making myself sick w some depression n anxiety . Saw my regular doc for that. This surgery really took a toll on my whole body.  Do all my exercises plus. Now I'm thinking I'm headed for a revision. Ahhhhhhh!!  Well at least I can still laugh at myself. U hang in there n best of healing to all

I can relate to what you are going through ive only had 3 surgeries. But when I wasn't getting a definite diagnosis. Ig sought another OS opinion even though I really liked my OS but i needed someone to give me some answers becsuse zi did want pain at 40 with arthritis to be the end of living for me it took me to see 3 different OS before i found one that was able to give me some answers. So I suggest you let a fresh pair of eyes look at it.

Thank you young, I tried to get a second opinion but I have to wait a year. What's not visible to the eye can be very deceiving. All x-rays show the hardware is in place and that's what they go by. I can't get a MRI because the implant! So it's hard to explain to them. I think my Dr knows it failed. He follow ups with me every 4 weeks even after 7 months. I got the Arthrex kneecap replacement and he said as far as he knows it's good for 5 PLUS YEARS!

Good luck trying to get anyone to admit it's screwed up. Or another doc screwed up. Hope they figure out how to help you.

    Tina63800,

I've never heard of waiting a year zi sought out my second opinion 3 months after my first replacement so keep trying cause I know my pain was unbearable and my initial surgeon said ohhh its to early i wouldn't except that since I was the one suffering. Im not sure wer you live but i was also told if i couldn't find anyone who see me to go to the ER and they would set an appt in one of there clinics to followup with. Good luck dont give up and don't let them tell to just keep waiting until they see something.

Hi young, I believe that my Dr knows that's it not right nor will it ever be. He is a busy man but does take the time to talk to me. He has mentioned total knee replacement a few times and says I'm young. That's not what I want and I do not look forward to it. It may be my only option? I hope not.

im from the u.s., I understand from other people these surgeons don't like to mess with other surgeons work. I'm goin to go back to my original doc. If he doesn't help me I'm goin to have to go the forever phone calls to find another doc to get a second opinion.  I know something is just not right with my right Tkr, constant pain in inner thigh aback of thigh extending from knee up. Had this surgery done March 2016, it is now 8 months later, I'm done!

I'm from the U. S TOO. My appointment on Wednesday with the Dr, he is referring me to a pain specialist. He wants him to do nerve blocks. I don't know if this will help matters? He told me the grinding, popping and pain is normal! I don't think so. He said that I will always be in pain because that's all my knee knows! Don't make any sense to me. I didn't have issues with my right knee like this. I have set up my appointment with my pain Dr that does deal with my back issues. I will have to wait it out and see if things improve. I'm sorry your going through this as well. It's very frustrating and it's unfortunate we didn't have the outcome we expected. Have they ever did nerve blocks on you? If so how did they help you?
