Tiredness and loss of vision over two months...

Hi,

In October of 2015 I was working and noticed that my vision had gone 'strange', along with this came a consistent tiredness that would not get worse with exercise or better with sleep. After about 2 weeks, these symptoms went and I was back to normal. In January 2016, these symptoms returned and were of the same severity until the beginning of March when my legs began to ache and my vision and tiredness got worse over the course of a week. Along with it becoming more severe, I've got a cough and a pain in my chest of a similar nature to heartburn.

I've been to the doctors to have blood tests. They have come back 'normal' for things such as blood sugar level, iron level etc. and negative for glandular fever. My vitamin D level was 14, however I was told that this would not explain my tiredness or any of the other symptoms as it is not low enough. I have also had my blood pressure checked, thyroid function, blood oxygen level and they have listened to my heart (I had bacterial endocarditis in 2000 and had been taking Lisinopril daily until September 2015). The doctor also checked checked for swollen joints and lymph nodes; of which I have none.

The symptoms that have come about over the past few weeks are:

 - Extreme tiredness that does not get better or worse regardless of any activity I do or sleep I get. (I do not get shortness of breath!) It seems as though the tiredness is coming from my head. It's as if, if the tiredness in my head was gone, I could continue normally with the rest of my symptoms.

 - Strange vision. This is hard to explain and I feel like I'm going insane! It is not blurry and is not tunnel vision from what I can tell. It feels as though I can focus on less within my central vision at a time. It is most noticable when reading as I can see less on the page and can focus on half a word at a time even though I can see the rest of the word is there! It's not blank, I just can't look at it if that makes sense.

 - Muscle aches, not the kind that comes after exercise, soreness etc. but more like restless leg syndrome but in my arms as well. This only extends to my arms and legs, I feel it nowhere else in my body. I would also like to stress that I have no pains in my joints, no numbness and no pins and needles.

 - A cough, not a tickly throat, but more of a chesty cough.

 - Heart burn kind of feeling but not all the way up my throat, up to about my heart. Sometimes it feels like a pain in my chest but tends to be on the right side.

 - Strong heart beat in my chest. I notice this most often when I go to sleep at night.

Finally I would like to stress that I'm having no issues sleeping and have not had during this whole time. My main concern is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome although my doctor has said that's unlikely. I've had to have time off work for this during the last few weeks that my symptoms have got worse but my doctor recommends that I get back to work as soon as possible.

If any of you have had similar issues or could point me in the right direction that would be of great help and would put me at ease. I don't want to stop now, I have a promising career ahead at 19!

James

Please have an eye examination, especially to see that your optic discs, maculae and visual fields are fine. They will also see if your eye muscles are working properly and if you need any prisms, irrespective of whether you need eyeglasses or not. This can get you started on helping yourself, like you have already done so by coming on this forum. Best wishes.

Hi, I have had an eye examination and have been told that my eyes are fine. However this was last October when I had a short period of feeling this way. Is it worth testing again?

As respecthealth says have an eye test. I would have thought 14 for your vit D was pretty deficient and would cause fatigue and muscle ache.

Hi, I was told that in the UK a Vit D level of 14 is common during the winter time and it is unlikely to be that.

Have a quick Google search and I think you will find that 14 is deficient at any time of the year. I was 26, now 72 in my January blood test, after eighteen months, having had a vit D prescription from my doctor.

Hi again. I would get your eyes examined again. Even though pretty rare, Eyes Can Change Any Time (just wanted to emphasize that as so many people mistakenly do not go if they have had theirs done recently). Eye specialists understand this. I should know as I was in the eye industry for quite a long time!  Also they would do extra tests, for more information, that they would not usually do on someone so young as routine. May help to write down concise notes on exactly what you're experiencing, start date, frequency, headaches, etc, - this will help the eye specialist loads. Good luck. By the way. I agree with ptolemy on the vitamin D issue - 14 is too low.
