Tiredness and mood swings

Posted , 2 users are following.

I was told i had polycystic ovaries a month ago and it has explained why I’m always tired and often experiencd mood swings! Being only 19 it’s difficult constantly being tired and I don’t know what i can do to help it - I started taking Berocca last month and I’m not feeling any change yet. I want to go back to my doctor, but wonder what they could actually do to help me further as it’s not curable and a lifelong health issue

I have polycystic ovarian syndrome and it never made me tired, have you had other blood tests to rule out the tiredness? Are you on the contraceptive pill?  That made me really tired it also made my mood swings worse. They say polycystic ovarian syndrome is caused by insulin resistance. Metformin is given to help with symptoms. It helps with your blood sugar levels and often helps people with their weight. You can’t drink alcohol with it though and it can cause indigestion and it upsets your tummy a bit at the beginning.

I had a blood test to check lots of different things, but everything was clear - my doctor said that tiredness was because of my ovaries, but it was something I’d have to live with - I’m on the pill, but i had this issue before starting on them a few months ago - I’ve been like this for ages, it’s just gradually getting worse

Have you seen a PCOS specialist? Have you been offered metformin? Which pill are you on by the way?

I haven’t been offered anythig or seen any specialist - i was told the best way to help it was to stay on the pill and i was put it on to start with to regularise my periods and to help my acne - she told me there was nothing she could do to help me further, just watch my diet and exercise when i can - I’m on the  rigevidon pill

Google polycystic ovarian syndrome insulin resistance. Many GPs don’t know all the facts about PCOS and don’t take it seriously. If you put weight on you are at a higher risk for diabetes. Also being on a combined pill and having PCOS puts your risk up of having blood clots as I have unfortunately learned too late. I would take acne scars over multiple pulmonary emboli any day! Metformin is used to even out your blood sugar levels and is often used in PCOS patients for their symptoms. Be careful with the combined pill as it has many health risks, which increase if you have PCOS. You would be better off on the mini pill. Ask about metformin for PCOS and see what your doctor says. Nowadays they google everything like we do so she will realise it is an option.
