Tiredness and other weird symptoms

Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone else can identify with some weird problems I'm suffering with lately. I was diagnosed with proctitis 5 years ago and another colonoscopy last July confirmed another flare up. Since then I've been battling to control the symptoms and have finally ended up taking prednisolone suppositories for the last 2 months. 5asa doesn't suit me so they are not an option.

Over the last few months I have been getting increasing pain in my left side sometimes quite bad other times like an annoying discomfort. The bleeding I experience is darker in colour than it was. However with the steroids that is much more under control now. The other symptoms I'm suffering with are really terrible night sweats that wake me up throughout the night soaking wet through and cold. Plus I'm now suffering with gastric reflux at night too, along with burning tummy pains. It's all very obscure and I don't know whether it's to do with uc or medication. I'm also feeling tired beyond belief although I don't think I'm anemic according to my last, fairly recent blood test results.

Any advice or if anyone else has experienced this I'd be really pleased to hear from. Just to know I'm not losing the plot!

Thank you for reading this x

    Hello Louise

At last!! Someone else with the same symptoms!! I am sorry you are suffering, you are not on your own. Awoke last night about 1am with a large piece of yucky undigested food back in my throat and acidy, had to fish it out and get rid of it - eurgh!!redfaceredfaceso disgusting and cringeworthy and I thought it was just me. I don't why it happens.

Are you anaemic? I am and ferrous levels are low. My tiredness is driving me mad I can't be bothered to do much at all and just sleep.

Blood varies sometimes bright red other times dark, tried steroids, didn't work, all came back in 2 weeks, they whacked up Mesalazine dose and I am not happy with that either as I feel it is make me more whoozy and the flare up is still there.

I have had recently weird night sweats and wake up dripping wet which I hate. You are not on your own and thanks for sharing because I feel it is not just me with this/feeling I am going mad.

I hope you feel better soon, what's the next step for you?

Sounds like you're going through a rough time too! But so good to know I'm not alone. I don't think I'm anemic as I haven't been bleeding nearly as much as I was last year and earlier this year. I don't know whether the medication or other aspects of the illness can have an effect on iron levels. All I know us that I'm experiencing exhaustion like I've never known. As soon as I get to see my ibd nurse again I'll report these symptoms.

I hope you too can get sorted out soon. I'm also taking omeprasol for the gastric reflux which normally controls it but I think the steroids can make symptoms worse. I thought that it was only oral steroids that I had a problem with. Seems it could be suppositories too. Perhaps you could get some medication sorted for your reflux.

Good luck and hope you feel better soon too x

      Hi RJ

Thank you for you kind thoughts. I'm so pleased to hear things are going well for you at the moment. Fingers crossed it continues.

I'm also in remission now after 12 months of bleeding etc. Finally succeeded with steroids which I'm now reducing and hoping things will continue to stay settled. I'm considering suggesting to my IBD nurse that if I manage to stay in remission without medication that I postpone going on the biologic therapy whilst things are good. I don't want to risk getting sick again because of side effects of very strong drugs. I don't know whether that is something to be recommended. I'm just fed up with all the medications I've taken and want to feel normal for how ever long I can do. Any thoughts?

      Take care of yourself X

Hi, the sweats are side effect of the steroids. Make sure you take B vitamins as they help with tiredness etc.

      Good luck all IBD sufferers.
