Things seem slow to improve thinking is this as good as it is going to get.have one good day then two bad . Still taking strong pain killers . My knee bend is at about 88 bend . I all so have a lot of pain at the bak of the knee this seem to have just started . Is this normal ? Have found out that when they tell you that you will have a nice new knee no one seems to tell you about the pain afterwards it is seems to me that I have along way to go and I am a bit fed up think will it ever be better.

Archie, it takes time, a lot of time....no one really tells you have gruelling, or depressing parts of the journey are.  I'm at seven months and feel so much better than two months ago.  At Christmas I was convinced it was right....it hurt so much,I had to back to using a cane at night... But I've been biking and walking and I think it helps.  I'm not stiff like. I was before after sitting for just a short time. Now if I go for ling drives I do get dome stiffness, but it has improved.  Hang. In there, it's a slow race.

Archie, seriously I have read this forum for about a year now.  I used to read it a lot in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep with pain.  Everyone heels differently, and at different speeds.  I think what I've learned from this surgery is a lot more patience....  I knew it would be a rough journey, but I had hoped easier than it's been.  It's major surgery and even that takes tine to get over.  I'm starting to not think about my leg as much anymore, so I hope that means it's getting stronger.  If you read through old posts on this forum, you will find you are far from brings line in your feelings...  You expression and frustration are the feelings of many.

It's a well known fact that this is the most painful of operations. More painful than even heart surgery and recovery is far longer.

Not only is bone cut off and replaced but muscles, tendons nerves and ligaments are all cut and rejoined and have to heal and grow strong again.

Fluid is the worst enemy and if your prone to that.,pain will be worse.

Stick with it Archie - you're at a point when you'll start to feel better smile

What has that got to do with anything?

Some of us on here are medics! Most of us understand the physiology!

We are taking about pain and recovery.

You should ask more questions of your medics and understand more about the operation.

I joked with my surgeon that 'at least i want having heart surgery'

he replied 'actually this is far worse in terms of recovery and pain'

i know of someone who had a fast recovery and was playing golf at 3 weeks. 1 year on she's having problems again. I prefer slow and sure. So i can be confident my knee will meet the physical demands my training puts on it!

God that your recovery was so swift. Let's hope you don't have problems down the track....

Don't know where she and her venom came from but hope she dissapperars just as quickly. People who randomly spew old cliches are an endangerment. That NP gain, no pain business went out years ago

Sounds like a Jr. High football coach I had over 60 years ago. Took his anger from a bad marriage out on a bunch of 13-14 yr old kids. Positive attitude is one thing, stupid uninformed advice is another. Stay with her Suzi.......maybe you can educate a bit

I am really shocked at Janes reply, totally out of order.  I have made an extremely fast and painless recovery, so much so that my surgeon has asked me to be his demonstration model three times a year for his new intake of baby doctors.  I was very lucky, but I would never dream of telling anyone to just, 'get over it'  and, as for it only being  just a knee, well actually it is one of the most complex weight bearing area's to have surgery on.  Bones are notoriously painful, and recovery from major joint/bone surgery will always be a great deal more painful than major organ surgery.  Please get your facts right before making sanctimonious comments that distress those struggling to return to some semblance of normality.

Your smuggness does you no credit!

      Good on you Liz!

Please remember to tell those students about those for whom recovery is a nightmare no matter how fit they are. smile

    Hi Archie,

My operation was a bit different to yours; I had a patella realignment, lateral release and arthroscopy and I'm now at 12 weeks post op. Just the last week or so I've also felt like it's been 2 steps forward and 1 back, but I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I've just reached 110° flexion.

I feel like as I gain flexion I'm losing strength in the patellofemoral tendon (just under the kneecap). I guess we just have to realise that as the scarring settles and the soft tissue becomes more flexible the smaller stabiling muscles will be coming back online and complaining from lack of use.

Take your time and listen to your body, but try not to listen to all of its complaints. Sometimes you just have to grit your teeth and push through; a little discomfort is ok, lot of pain is not. Plus you can always come on here and a vent if you need to; the majority of us are very supportive and not arrogant at all! 😜

i am 16 weeks and I know where you are coming from. It is a horrible operation and was the worst pain I ever felt. Child birth is a walk in the park compared to this. I have had 2 children. I have mornings of extreme stiffness still and days when I walk too much can be painful. My knee is still very hot and there is a lot of inflammation. Just want to tell you that what you are experiencing is normal. We  are all different. My

cousin had a knee replacement and said she had very little pain.Hang in there.
