TKR 4 Months

Up until the last few days I have been doing very well, then suddenly my knee started swelling more, getting tighter and a bit more pain. On Sunday I found it difficult to walk. I am wondering if it is because I am sat more at my desk now I am back at work therefore not getting enough elevation. I haven't overdone it. I am now trying to make more of an effort and at nightime elevate and ice. Maybe I have been lulled into a false sense of security, being impatient and not appreciating how long everything takes. It has been a bit easier the last two days.

Is this all normal? my husband thinks I should go to the GP but I dont want to bother them if this is the case.

I think you are probabably right - and it's up and down anyway even for 6-12 months, but your body is telling you sometihng. I would still 'bother' the GP (thats what we pay tax for) or get a phone appointment if your GP offers those.

Does this also coincide with stopping pain medication I wonder?  I've noticed a huge difference since stopping taking tramadol . .. Could be too long sitting. . that's always bad for me, but if you feel unsure of the reason, take a trip to the GP  . . . . I'm sure he/she wont mind being bothered!

Not been on medication for a while now, only the odd paracetamol if it niggles too much. I do think I am probably better when moving around, I am now every now and again pulling my desk drawer out and putting my leg on that.

That's what they are there for. I suspect your change of activity might be part of it but don't let be lulled into a false sense of self diagnosis. Sooner the better.

Hi Shelley . There are so many ups and downs with this op they just throw you. You think you are through it and wham something starts up again. You have really done well to be back at work but you are still probably not fully healed yet. By all means get it looked at if it doesn't settle but perhaps you are overdoing it a little. Listen to your body maybe it needs more rest. I am nearly 8months post op and I,m afraid still not fully over it. Best of luck.

Hi Shelley,  April 5th will be four months for me.  My only complaint is if I stand in one spot for more than 15 minutes my knee feels so stiff, it becomes difficult to bend it.  I do leg stretches and use the stationary bike three to four days a week.  This is helping.  My Dr said it is a long recovery as it was a very big surgery.   I need my other knee done, but right now I say nooooooooo, it will be done when I can not walk on it. Good luck to you.

I'm at the 5 month mark and have experienced the same thing. From what I understand, it is all normal. Ice and rest and moderate exercise is still necessary. And I find when the weather changes, it does impact my knees. Everyone says give it times. 6 months. A year. 2 years. Keep reminding yourself of how far you've come and look forward to when it will all seem like a dream (or nightmare, depending upon the day).
