Tkr 5.5 weeks on

Posted , 15 users are following.

i am now 5.5 weeks after a left total knee replacement and can't believe the amount of pain this has given me. I am put off having my other knee done as the pain is unbearable at times. I can get 110 bend but still struggling with some of the lifting exercises, need to use the rubber band for those. Lots of spasm pain and my knee is extremely hot compared to the other one. Slight swelling as well so still using ice three to four times a day. The other issue is loss of appetite, I've lost 14 kilos since having this done and don't feel like eating at all. Anyone else had this?

      Hi Tucks

i too feel as if I'm not the same person

i've lost all my ...get up and go.... I went to see my surgeon and he agrees my knee isn't doing as well as it should do

he said the next visit would normally be 12months ..but he wants to see me in 7 weeks to see if things have settled down ....

      I'm really fed up now

Oh no, poor you Jean, try and stay positive, I hope everything is ok and it's just a low few days, fingers crossed for you 😊

Thank you but as I'm now 17 weeks post op I can't see there being much improvement in the few weeks before I see the Surgeon again

I've done all my exercises regularly so if the knee isn't doing as it should it's not my fault

but I'm thinking positive   That's all I can do

The bend is fine and the straightening brilliant ...it's just that it's still causing me lots of pain

Hi Jean. I know how you feel. I had my op in Aug 2014 and until 4 weeks ago was going really well.i then hurt my back on the static bike and could only do little exercise.  Since then my knee has become painful again and feels very heavy again. I know I need to lose at least 3 stone, which I am determined to lose with all the support on this forum, but my "good knee" is about 4inches smaller than my operated one!!! Physio stopped after 6 weeks as they said until swelling goes down the bend wouldn't improve. Well it has in my opinion and the straightening is great. I just feel that I am going backwards and hope that by losing some weight I will start to feel like my old self again..  Sorry to be on a downer xx

oh jean, so sorry to hear this.  so what does the surgeon say?  how can you have both brilliant bend and stretch and still have so much pain?  that is a contradiction in terms for me and is a testament for your incredibly resiliance and grit!  really, hat off to you.  does it hurt the whole time?  in a particular place or just all over?  i am assuming it is not swollen anymore?  have they x-rayed it regularly?  gone through the mri again?  i can imagine how fed up you must be.  you have done everything you possibly can and still pain.  at this point you just want to know what the hell the cause is, right?  my thoughts are with you.

hi ruby ... i have read on here over and over again that if the exercising stops, the stiffness comes back.  a scary thought but in a way, also the motivator, no? so perhaps no more static bike but go back to your exercises you got when you came out of hospital?  have you tried a lymphatic massage for your swelling? i still have the occasional one and swear this is reason i never had that much in the first place.  i also need to rethink my whole exercise / food regime but what better time to do it at the beginning of a new year?  but for the time being, i need to focus on healing fully - incl building up my wasted chicken leg - and getting back more energy.  i think once that has happened, you automatically want to take on more.  don't be too hard on yourself.

Hi Britta. I think you are right. I have started from the beginning with the exercises again and also invested in a peddle machine. That static bike is definitely a no no from now on.  I haven't tried lymphatic massage but will be giving it a go. I see my consultant at beginning of Feb and I intend to be at least a stone and half lighter so he can't blame that for anything. I know from following your posts in the past that you have been through a lot with you TKR and you know what you are on about so I will most certainly take your advice.  Many thanks xx

      Hi Britta

i haven't a clue as to why I'm still in pain the nurse who was in the room with him spoke to me afterwards and she said it could be the sciatica causing it

but I really don't think so ...I'm no doctor but...why if I walk too far does the knee bruise  surely that's a sigh something isn't right

I will pester my own GP until I get some answers

sigh.... It looks like I will have painful nights forever

i've ordered a recliner chair as I've heard lots of people get a good rest in those ...so fingers crossed

      thanks for caring

Yes it's still swollen and painful both day and night but obviously more at night because that's all you think about

and  no X-rays until I go next time ...I think he's hoping I will miraculously be running around by then

      Hi Ruby

I know exactly how you feel I still do all the original exercises everyday plus use my pedal machine while watching telly

I feel I'm going backwards the pain is in my knee is constant and like yours a heck of a lot bigger than my good knee

i lost weight after the op and so I can't put it down to that.

My whole leg at times feels like a heavy weight and I could do with a crane to lift it ...lol

maybe I need a holiday in the sun ...I wonder if the Doc will give me one on prescription

Oh Jean sometimes I wonder if it will ever get back to normal.  My op was 6th August 2014 and everyone said it went really well.  If that was going well then anyone who's op didn't go so well has my absolute sympathy!, some sun and a lovely holiday sounds so good.  If you doc gives you a prescription for one, let me know. I will be changing doctors REALLY fast lol.

Try to stay positive and I will keep exercising. We will get better xx
