TkR 5 Days ago

can you damage your knee when pulling your chair nearer to the table when your sat on it after having TKR 5 days ago.

i just sat on the dining chair pulled myself to the table as you would normally without thinking and wow the pain is excruciating.  That happened around 17.00hrs I still can't sleep due to the pain even after taking analgesia.  Could l have done some damage.  It felt like my knee hit a brick wall doing 50mph I'm presuming the knee would have hit the knee cap.

Mandy, I think it's fairly safe to say that you didn't do any long-term damage. I find it amazing that you had a moment where you forgot you had a TKR. Everything has been torn apart and beaten up, so you most likely just touched on something that wasn't ready to move the way you moved it. Healing is a long process and there will most likely be similar moments later on as you test the knees abilities.

      Hello Mo

Thank you for you reply, it is still very painful and swollen which I'm sure it will be.  But you have given me great comfort and confidence thank you once again.  At breakfast when I sit at the table I will pull the table towards me instead for moving the chair.  I suppose it's about thinking and adapting. Thanks again

It was about 22 months ago that I had both knees replaced while working in India. I had very little information and was so desperate for help in understanding my pain and numerous concerns. I had friends introduce me to people they knew that had had TKR's (via Facebook). Some of what I experienced they didn't have knowledge of, which didn't bring me much comfort at all. Three months afterwards, I found this site, while looking for information on hernias. There is a lot of knowledge and experience here. The best thing is that we don't all go through the same issues, and our bodies (even my two knees) respond and heal differently. I'm glad I could bring you some peace of mind. Others have talked about much more serious mishaps after surgeries and their surgeons told them they wouldn't have damaged the knee. I remember the 2nd week after my surgeries and the PT was having me bend to a point that I thought my stitches would pop. They didn't. It's normal to be concerned and have questions and you've got a bunch of people here to walk through it with you. biggrin I hope that continues to bring you comfort.

    Hi Mandy,

after my bilateral tkr's.  I hired a hospital chair for home for a couple of weeks.  It was high up and easy to get in and out of.  I remember the first time I sat on my dining room chair, like you, the pain was excruciating.  I screamed and cried with the pain and managed to pull myself up.  It was just that the chair was so much lower than what I'd been using and this was nearly 3 weeks after op.  It was a gradual thing to get comfortable sitting on a normal height chair and even the toilet.  I found I just " plonked" myself down and 10 months later, I still do first thing in the morning lol.

I think you'll be fine.  It was very brave of you to sit so low.  I'm envious.  There are a lot of things to consider now, that are going to be different and possibly, difficult.  Very early days for you.  I hope you continue to do well.

    best wishes

    Sue xx

      Hello Sue,

Thank you for your reply, you are right there will be a lot of things to consider, making sure we move correctely and safely.  That will be my learning curb.  It is still very painful and swollen again, but I'll use the cryotherapy machine before breakfast. Thank you reassuring me.

One additional tidbit, Mandy. The swelling usually lasts a long, long time. As in 6 months to a year. I still have times when one knee is swelling (always the right one, but aparently the knee cap is bad). Ice throughout the day, for increments of about 20 minutes, especially after any amount of walking, standing and exercising.

This is what kept me going...noticing that though there was pain/stiffness/swelling, I was feeling much better than I did before the surgery. And then knowing that it was going to get better, not continuing in a downward spiral. smile

Dont worry Mandy, It happens some time due to vitamns and proteins problems. You firstly consult with doctor and take home remedies.

The prosthesis is solid. I fell the day after my revision and twisted the femur into. A 20 degree torque break from inside to the outside of the bone. The new , day old prosthesis is was fine. Absolutly no damage. You are just badly swollen and have added to the aggravation.I hope you started icing immediately and have continued to do so. Fear of doing damGe to the knee is almost universal but really very, very hard to do. Right now, ice.and elevate and make sure you continue to do the basic stretching excercises until it claims down in 24 to 48 hours.

I'm just amazed you can sit on a chair at a table just 5 days after a TKR!

Thank you for your comments, I have bought a cryotherapy machine and I keep using it all day. I have also elevated my leg. Then i"ll get up and have a walk around the house or around the close. Hopefully the swelling will come down soon.

      Cheers Mandy

Yep can understand how painful it was .. were you not put on narcotics eg. oxycontin/endone to manage your pain.  I'm now at 10.5mths post op and still icing due to severe swelling as others have said every knee heals differently and I still use a hospital chair and table at home for my laptop.  Also still use the over the toilet seat as I find the toilet is too low to sit on.

Take care and for some of us it's a very long journey.

      Cheers... Tracey

I'm guessing you are not in UK. I have been told not to walk without one crutch till after six weeks even though it is apparently going ahead of schedule!
