TKR 5 weeks ago. Have bad sciatica Now. Does this happen?

I had a TKR almost 5 weeks ago.  I have been taking plain Tylenol as narcotics make me very sick.  It has been difficult but 2 weeks ago I was walking with a cane only in the house.  Since then I have developed moderately severe low back pain going into both hips.  It is very difficult for me to walk & is not getting better.  The doc prescribed a muscle relaxant which I take at night & finally helps me sleep...but I don’t take it during the day as I live alone & need to drive myself.  Anyone else have this problem after surgery?  Any suggestions on what I can do?  Just want to cry when I can barely walk.

Just scroll and you will come across one if his replies. Just be alerted that he writes with a Brooklyn accent so he can be hard to understand sometimes. Hey Tex, wake up, the lady needs some of your pontificating. He also has a doctorate and so.writes has trouble understanding g what he's written

Boy, did I screw that up. Should be: he has a doctorate and sometimes he has trouble understanding what he has written. Now that's much better. However; he and I have kept the medical profession eating well the last few years so he knows from which he speaks. This is a grueling recovery but you will get through it and be better off in the long run. Have patience and work smart. Never let anyone put you in agonizing pain. Learn to know the difference between moderate pain from exercise and the pain that puts you in misery..there is a difference.

Thank you for all the advice & encouragement.  The only stories I ever heard about were those where people were walking miles in just a little over a month...pain free.  Helpful to me to know that maybe most people suffer a little more...that I am not that abnormal.  Tylenol is like taking skittles & i’m not suppose to take Ibuprofen cause I am on a blood thinner. ( But I do cheat). I’ve tried several narcotics eating 1st as well as taking a nausea med before hand.  But I still get in a vicious cycle of vomiting.  I knew that going in.  Thought I was pretty tough.  😏. Still it hurts bad  & I probably haven’t been walking properly causing all this back pain.

      Thanks again.

Yes. I hear you. Before surgery all you hear is how quickly everyone heals and with minor pain. Maybe there are a few people out there that are athletes but I will tell the truth if any one asks me about it. I never would have done it if I had known what I really would be going through

Hey, Im on eloquis, and have been cheating also.  cut back on it so I could take antiinflammatories, but hell, they didn't help either.  I took Ibuprofen, celebrex , and could not tell a difference in pain relief.  So, Im back on Tyleonl, an threw the tramadol away.  That was like eating skittles to me!  Im 4 mths out and sitting here right now with a large bag of frozen peas on the top of my knee an one on the bottom of knee.  Oh, to go back in time.....

I am like you and the pain meds got me into a cycle of vomiting.  I am 19 weeks post TKR it wasn't until week 15 that I was able to get back to the gym and then only modified exercise routine.  I remember a month after my TKR several different friends were amazed that I wasn't walking normal and back to my normal routine....not they have had a TKR but told me about co-workers that were running marathons a month after there TKR or other such nonsense!!!  I told them come talk to me when you have one done!!!  Thankfully I found this site which has help me keep my sanity during this recovery.

Oh my!  My in home PT said to me when she found out I was cheating with ibuprofen....“Do you want to bleed internally?”   My unsaid thought was YES....rather than suffer this pain!  😮. But you are correct...it doesn’t do much for the pain.

Eventually it has to get better!  Let me know when it does for you.  So thankful to hear from so many that share that this is not a piece of cake.

I've always tried to be polite when people start with that crap. I'll say somethi g like " hold on a second, I think my BS meter needs new batteries and I just want it correct for this story". Folks just don't know how absurd they sound when they come up with those whoppers.

25 years ago I was explaining to a friend that my wife was doing well after a mastectomy but of course it had taken a toll on her mentally as cancer generally always does to people. The office know it all was right into it with her story of her own Marvelous recovery etc., etc and that no one should need more than a week end for recovery. Come to find out she was talking about a needle biopsy that turned out negative. Fortunately for her the entire office didn't overhear that, only 3 or 4 but within am hour the entire office might as well have been standing there. Before days end the needle biopsy was not near as pain ful as the office needling. Just shake your head and then wide eyed say ' that's certainly remarkable, wish I had their doctor.
