Hi Dave I am nine weeks post op and still experiencing horrendous pain at night. My consultant and physio both say I am doing great, movement is very good and I am pain free most of the day. I go to the gym three times a week and swimming and can honestly say I am glad I have had the knee replacement, until the night time comes !

I have tried liquid Morphine, sleeping tablets and nothing works, the pain can either be shin splints, in my thigh or knee itself, this also effects my husband as I keep him awake and he has to work next day.

Apparently this is normal so I keep telling myself things will get better, seems we have no choice but to grin and bear it.

Hi .I am at the end of my second month and  was progressing fairly well. Then about 6 days ago my physical therapist was manually flexing my knee. He does this when I first arrive for therapy. But this last time it felt like he pushed it harder then he ever did previously. It was definitely uncomfortable. Now it has been feeling like when I was about 2 weeks post up.  Now I'm having a lot more difficulty and pain with moving around in bed, getting up from a chair and walking, pretty much anything .  I am worried that there may be something wrong. I feel like I need pain meds again

. The pain is concentrated right below my knee cap. I have my second post op appt next Tuesday ..I am going to ask for a renewal on my hydrocodone. Wonder if he'll let me have it. I am so discouraged. The pain is now unrelenting, I'm afraid it will never go awy.  I was doing so well before too,  sigh 😢

I am 9 weeks post op and using one crutch now. Pain at night can be quite severe, mostly thigh and ankle pain. Still getting sharp pins and needles pain in my knee. Still only bending at 90 degrees. My leg feels heavy most of the time. I'm advised to do my other knee in a few months time but can't even think about that at present. It is an incredibly difficult operation to recover from and have been advised that it will most likely take 12 months. At present, I'm not sure if it has been worth it but hoping that in a few more weeks I will have changed my mind!

I see this post was 4 months ago. I'm 9 weeks today and am exactly how you were at 9 weeks. How are you today? 4 months later?

    Hi Jean,

Not sure if you still visit this since it's 3 years ago.

I am at 9 weeks today and I'm still limping with 1 crutch! Sometimes I wish I never got it done 😔 I hate to say but I felt better before I had surgery done. Now that it's been 3 years for you, how is your knee now? ??

I'm also 9 weeks since TKR. Still having lot of pain particularly at night and not sleeping more than 2-3 hours at a time. Mobility good but sore if I do too much!! Tired all the time and frustrated can't get on with normal activity. Better before op but knee would only have got worse - hopefully it can only get better now. Going to see GP tomorrow so will see what he says about managing pain and sleep. Consultant well pleased with bend at 6/52 review though.

I was Googling for information and found this forum. I was a little disappointed it was 3 years old, too, but found your entry at the end. Anyway, I’ve had a TKR and I’m at 10 weeks. Never, ever thought the healing would be this difficult! At one point, I thought I was progressing, and then, the pain, swelling, and stiffness was back with a vengeance. The surgeon and the physical therapists (terrorists!) all seem to think I’m coming along just fine. I don’t. My bend is 110, but that’s the number they push me to, not what I can do on my own. Enough about me and my depressing thoughts...are you going to therapy? When your leg is out straight, does the back of your knee go flat down to the bed or couch or is there space for your hand under your knee? NEVER MIND ALL THIS! Just noticed that you wrote your entry FOUR months ago! Sorry.

Hmmm. Maybe you could let me know how well your recovery went. Thanks.

Hi Leeann I’m  only 9 days in but I see the resemblance to what you say about the thread but also  the way it goes with other things too.

I  guess if I could switch back I’d be there in a heart beat but it’s not going to happen so just got to push on.

You ask the same things I want to know about is the knee flat etc.

the sleeping is a problem at the moment with no two nights the same.

The bend is there at 90+ but forced like you say.

I start physio Thursday and hope to get some more answers then, so I’ll post if I do.

      good luck and keep going

Carl! So glad to have someone to talk to...

The knee flat thing has been corrected. I would rest my leg on the coffee table and let gravity pull it down. When I’d get up to walk, it felt like the knee got sunk in or something shifted. The doc checked it out and I think he thought I was nuts. Ha! Another thing I did  for that was to lay on my stomach on the bed and let my knees hang off the side—and held it like that for three to five minutes.

Sleeping was also a problem. Impossible in the bed, so I slept on my back in the recliner. Did that for almost a month. The physical therapist told me to get back in bed which took a while to get used to, but I’m glad I did. Maybe your leg doesn’t straighten out in the chair? I don’t know. Now at 11 weeks and sleeping is still somewhat difficult. Seems like I wake up and quiver every time I change positions. Not really painful, but it just gets so stiff. Sometimes I get up in walk around or just hang my leg over the side.

Well, I’m off to therapy. Hope to hear from you soon.

HiI'm nearly 9 weeks post tks. Went to surgeon 10 days ago for check up. e was drlihjtrd and said I was a great success. These last few days it's all changed. Can't get to sleep can't stay asleep. Taking pains killers again. My knee is swollen and stiff and am finding stairs very hard. Last week I was going up and down easily enough. I'm very down now and feel that people think I'm being sorry for myself.Very disappointed.
