TKR minus 11 days.....

Evening all.....

So, I'm on the last leg (ha ha!) before my op on March 6th, and had my pre op today. So long as my MRSA swabs come back negative, it's all systems go. Must say I was a bit taken aback, when I was chatting to the nurse practitioner doing all my tests, and told her I'd already been to the Enhanced Recovery class - apparently my particular surgeon doesn't participate in the programme! So I'm to forget a lot of what I was told by the team last week, and expect a couple of extra days in hospital..at the end of the day, though, it's all about the final result, not the journey there. I'm happy to report no recent meltdowns, and Hubby was looking at online pictures and videos

of my forthcoming surgery today, asked me if I know what it looks like lol! Up till today he's refused to look at it at all, so it's definite progress!

Hope everyone is well and pain free tonight x xxx

Hi terri, good luck for your op you seem to be in a good frame of mind which will.help.try not to rush things afterward, we all heal at different paces, and its so easy to think I should be doing this or that. Just bear with it and let your body heal at its own pace.

Good luck for the operation, and a couple of extra days in hospital doesn't sound like a bad idea to me at all!  why be in a hurry to get back home when in hospital at least they'll serve you meals and make the bed for you!  I looked at the video of the operation last night six weeks after the op.

Be sure to let us know how you get on, Terri, we will all be thinking of you at the time! X

Hi Terri well my day has come, I am now counting down the hours, I have had my first preoperation drink, and my bag is packed. This time tomorrow my op will be over and the journey begins? I will keep you posted with my progress, I will be in hospital 3-5 days but aiming for 3. Just a thought is this classed as metal surgery instead of plastic surgery? Take care xxLouise

Good luck Louise!  Yes, when you try to lift your leg first time you'll definitely think 'heavy metal surgery!'  Don't rush to get out!  and keep us all informed!

Hello Louise! I have lived in Jolly old Clacton-on-Sea for 80 years bar 4 years evacuated near Tring, Hertfordshire. My last TKR was in the disreputable Essex County Hospital, Colchester ! 'Nuff said, and no physio offered, but I am going to have my second TKR in The Oaks, Colchester which is a private hospital and consultant but NHS are kindly bearing the cost, should I live that long. I have two other unrelated ops to face In Essex County first. And ongoing bronchitis and asthma etc. We DO have such fun, don't we? rolleyes but thank God for NHS anyway.wink

Wow you certainly are going through the wars. I hope your 2 other ops go well xx take care

Good luck for all these operations!  My very first holiday (in 1948) was in Clacton on Sea!  I still remember sitting on a wall there while my father took a photograph . .almost my earliest memory! (born 1944)

When I joined the forum I put my email address . . somehow didn't put a username, and it just used the surname . . .so lots of peosple seem to think I'm a man!  A couple of times I've mentioned my husband, but then thought . . OH dear, perhaps they'll think I'm gay . . .

Hi Terri I am back. Had TKR on Thursday 26th discharged home this afternoon. A little tearful I must say. But it is now behind me. My bend is only 65-67 and I am unable to straighten leg. This is due to the swelling! My leg is approx twice the size. So plenty of rest has been ordered. Tips: one of the OT gave me a straps that I can put around my foot to lift it in and out of bed this is the most important piece of equipment for me. Now for exercise time

and rest to help get over the op. Sleep get as much as you can when you can it will help the healing process. Good luck with your op I will be thinking of you xxx

I can sympathise with you over the swelling. . it makes any movement so difficult doesn't it!  Hopefully it will soon reduce to a more manageable size!  Cry as much as you like!  I always think it let's go of the tension and afterwards you feel a bit more  positive.  the first couple of weeks are horrible. . but it does get better, honestly!!!  I didn't get one of those lifting things, and had never heard of them . .Wish I'd had one!  Rest . .ice. . and get your strength back!

Ah bless you, I was thinking about you earlier, wondering how you are. Lovely to hear from you!

I already bought one of the strap thingies, and Ive been practicing a bit - Im starting to wonder if Im the best prepared TKR in Derby lol!

Im with you on the tearfulness, Ive had a couple of meltdowns over the past couple of days, all to be expected from what Ive heard. Im trying to keep busy, but my thoughts catch up with me sometimes.....

One of the leaflets from the hospital says that they expect a 90 degree bend before discharge - I think they can whistle for that!

Make sure you rest and look after yourself, and i'll report back next week, hopefully xx

I mentioned that to my physiotherapist over here in Tenerife, and she said that it's not many who get the 90 bend before leaving hospital.  On that mechanical knee bending thing they put you on I was supposed to be 101 but it was a total lie. . must have been about 70 maximum!  Still having trouble keeping it at 90 seven weeks on. . if I relax for a day it goes back to about 80 . .Hard work this damned operation, but it will be worth it in the end (I hope!)

Hi Louise glad your op went well how was the spinal block and sedation

I suppose theyre just thinking "best case scenario" but the hospital staff all know we are individuals, and as such will have different results.

For the remainder of this week Im doing a "big clean" ( as the Occ Health chappies call it,) just like I do before Christmas, or before I go on holiday.....bit of a different experience at the end though, although its keeping my mind from dwelling on Friday too much.....

Thanks for your message, hope your recovery continues to go well xx

I started of with spinal block and sedation but then it was changed to a general because I had a few problems. But all went well in the end x

Hi I am beginning to feel more human. But not good because of the pain and swelling etc my leg / ankle will not bend.  So have not been vigilant in doing exercises.  Have had good nights though only waking to use toilets so I can not complain.x

Hey Louise Try not to worry too much about that. I was the same until almost the second week, or probably worse. . couldn't move the leg. . seemed like a block of concrete attached to the bed . . leg stuck out in front of me resembling a balloon more than a leg!  But my surgeon said that if you just try to move it, even if it's on the five hundredth time, eventually it will move.  Just don't give up, gently but surely, and soon you'll be looking back on this and thinkng  YAY I DID IT!

Can not wait I have now devised a chart to help because when you sat watching tv you don't realise that you are already doing exercises. I am also finding that I start to watch tv then wake up at end of programme lol can not be that good programme. You too take care our friend Terri will be joining our group in two days ?
    • Posted

Yes sleep when you can, because it seems to be a problem for most of us!  Too true. . tghe tv programmes are pretty awful, and over here in spain, even more awful I think!

I sure will! Ive had a lovely day today, one of my friends (who happens to own a pub at the end of my street!) invited me along with my daughter and a mutual friend for a Champagne Breakfast, I felt so spoilt! Then met up with a few people tonight who we socialise with so Ive had a "me" day. Tomorrows all about staying focussed, making sure Ive got everything in place, and trying not to panic! I hope to pop on here again tomorrow evening, once Im scrubbed with the pink Gloop and full of high carb drink.

Take care all, sleep well xx
