there are several........straight leg raises , stretching ....both flexion and flat, step-ups , balancing on one leg , minimal squats, quad stretch, calf stretch, leg pull backs while seated, heal slides........some are easier than others ......the step ups seem beneficial as well as the straight leg raises.

Yes quite normal, i found pain levels for me suddenly improved at about 8 weeks, but at five still bad especially at night , you sound like you are doing well

You are very early on at 5 weeks. I still had a lot of pain and was going to physical therapy 3 times a week. Biggest improvement started around 8 weeks. I am 4 months out now. I still have stiffness..some swelling and warmth when touching the knee. surgeon says all normal.

    First, 0 / +120 is most excellent at 5 weeks. Took me 12 to get to -1 / +123.

Now that you have your ROM back, you need to rebuild your dead quads, glutes, core and more. The musculature supports the knee taking the pressure off the joint and easing your pain. Gotta do the rebuild to walk correctly, regain your balance and climb stairs normally (alternating legs up and down without holding onto anything). Takes months...

    Post-TKR Exercising

The exercise program will also help get your ROM into the 125-135 range which is a great place to be. Stairs are so much easier.

Stiffness, tightness, a "band-like feeling" plus the clicking/popping noises will diminish gradually over 12-18 months. By a year, they should be almost gone with maybe a slight lingering effect for a while. You will not notice this progression. One day, you'll just realize that you haven't felt those things for a while.

However, the stiffness will absolutely return, even years later, if you don't keep the knee active and moving. It's a lifetime recovery. What? Nobody told you?

Thanks so much for your responses. I look forward to the day of no pain and back to normal activities. I had more swelling yesterday.....which hasn't been as issue until now, and more pain . I must have pushed too hard with the exercises.......I didn't feel as though I did but I don't know what else would have caused the increased swelling and pain. How long did you take the narcotic pain meds ? I stopped the oxycodone at 4 weeks. Thanks again.....
