TKR very stiff and hard still burns after 9 weeks struggle to bend to 85 is this usual

Hello, I am 9 weeks TKR ( second attempt, first one 4 weeks before but became infected, so reopened and washed out) . My knee is very stiff and feels hard. The swelling is going down but I have a burning sensation all the time. I can extend my leg and lay it flat just about, but bending is another matter. It gets to about 85 and I can not bend it any more. It feels like a very tight band from mid calf to above my knee and it just wont give any more. The physio tells me to keep trying and that it will come but its really worrying me. I cant drive again yet its too uncomfortable, and I cant sit properly on a bus as I cant get my leg in behind the seats. I have to extend it into the aisle. . Has anyone else had this problem. Does a stationary bike help at all no one mentions this. Any reassurance would be appreciated or suggestions, as this is getting me down. Seeing the surgeon again in 3 weeks he is monitoring how the infection has affected me. Still have not got the all clear from the microbiologist yet. What a worry.

I'm at 6 weeks and very fortunate as my bend is 130+ and extension -1. I wasn't as fortunate with my first knee. My big issue now, like you, is burning - terrible burning that only lasts a few seconds but occurs every time i sit and get up or stretch my leg. MY surgeon thinks its part of scatica and has referred me to pt and then to a back surgeon. Good grief! I had to have a manipulation (MUA) because i couldn't bend more than 105 at 6 weeks. It made a huge difference and got to 120 right away. IT's a simple procedure and painless ad they knock you out for 20 minutes. If you are unable to move, more scar tissue is forming. I'm following your post and pray for healing for you. If you get some insight into curing the burn please share!!!

Hi its still early days this op takes time. I'm on to my second,, 3 months now other one was done, 12 months ago. Don't worry too much about the extension it'll happen. I found my static bike was a godsend. Am on it everyday since, four weeks it really helps. The important thing you have to remember is don't push too hard listen to your body rest, excercise and ice. Meds when needed good luck I don't regret mine at all. Walking fine swimming going up and down stairs no pain so stick in and good luck don't give up early days c

Hi your physio is right keep up with the exercises.. I'm 10 weeks tkr and have had a very stiff knee when I saw surgeon at 5 weeks it wouldn't even make 75, had to see him again at 9 weeks and it had made progress but only a little. At week 7 I really pushed it as I thought this would get it working I was so wrong and my knee really stiffened up.
My physio couldn't understand it and told me to totally back off only do exercises and short walks.. Nothing extra, I listened and followed her instructions with plenty of ice.. Somehow doing less has given me more since Saturday my knee has improved no end now can sit on sofa without needing the recliner out., driving is much easier, (only been able to drive easily this week) and my walking has improved. So hopefully over next few weeks you to will see an improvement.. Keep at it we all heal at different rates

I am 7 months post op, and thought that I was going to lose my mind about a month ago. I kept pushing myself with physio, but every time they tried to add anything to my program, I would be in such pain that I would end up on the couch. Both my family doctor and surgeon told me to listen to my body and just live life and do a lot more walking, less physio exercises, and build strength slower. I decided that would be the course I would take, and am now feeling so much better. The tightness is reducing and I am able to stand for quite a long time now, as well as going up and down 43 steps to my waterfront to go swimming. My flexion is great, everything has healed correctly and tightness is reducing. Unfortunately, they don't tell you that you might have these complications, and my surgeon is completely surprised by it, but they should let us know that it is normal for some people, because I, and I assume others with the same issues, worried that it might mean something more serious and lifelong. Listen to your body, if you do too much and you get tightening, I agree with my doctors that we need to reduce what is causing more than a reasonable amount of pain.

ddaapp, so sorry for the anguish you are encountering. Both my TKR surgeries (11/2016 & 5/2019) responded to extra activity in addition to the doctor recommended PT. I found using the stationary bike and treadmill walking at the gym starting 4 weeks post-op helped tremendously. It was very painful the first few gym visits, but I noticed decreased pain and swelling after five visits. Another major positive was getting out of the house and interacting with friends. For me, exercising and socializing in equal portions are key to maintaining a positive, can-do attitude. Never give-up and never quit. Best wishes on your journey to pain free living. Regards, RJ

Your knee has suffered a lot of trauma and is still healing. It will come, it just takes time. It's at least a year recovery and you're only 1/6 of the way. A stationary bike is a good idea. Have the seat as high as it will go, no resistance and just rock the pedal back and forth if you can't manage a full rotation to begin with. My first time hurt a bit, but it eased in very quickly and helped a lot. Just don't try to force anything. Forget about no pain, no gain. That doesn't work while tissues are still healing.

Thankyou for that. I have a stationary bike now, I can only rock the pedals I will keep at it gently. This is a long journey

Thank you its just the burning pain is relentless. I can walk, very slowly, for about a mile round trip but that finishes me for the day. I do most activity in the mornings and the afternoon is spent pretty much with my leg up resting. I am aiming for Christmas !
