TMJ and Meniere's?

Posted , 4 users are following.

Hi all,

I was wondering if any of you have suffered from any jaw issues prior to/during your struggle with Menieres?

During some research, I've discovered that many people have found relief from Meniere's symptoms by getting treatment for TMJ (a jaw disorder). This is especially curious as I would never have considered that something jaw related could cause vertigo attacks, but apparently, the pressure can cause secondary hydrops to occur.

Let me know.

All the best,

Christina

      Hi Dablu,

Sure - if you are on Facebook I very much recommend a group called 'Meniere's Vertigo Tinnitus TMJ : Meniere's no more chat and support group'. There are remarkable testimonies from people who had menieres for 20+ years and found relief with jaw braces etc. That's where I've found most of my information.

TMJ is a condition where the temporomandibular joint (that's the joint that connects the jaw to the skull) is either out of place or damaged. It can be caused by MANY things, including grinding teeth in sleep. Doctors typically say that there has to be pain involved but a lot of people don't have pain and instead have symptoms very similar to Menieres. It can cause inflammation and headaches, including ear pain too due to the pressure being put on the inner ear.

There's not been much research done to connect the two (meniere's and possible jaw problems) but as nobody is sure what causes Meniere's, I don't see why this can't be it in at least some cases.

      Hope this helps smile

I don't know if this is a cure, and I'm sure it won't work for everyone but yeah. I definitely recommend the Facebook group.

Thank you for the info.  I've clenched my teeth in sleep for years and my dentist prescribed a bite plate (night guard) years ago.  He said the bruxism was probably caused by stress.  I wore it until I retired and thought I didn't need it anymore.  I got a second one a couple of years ago as my current dentist saw signs of clenching, including a cracked back filling.  I got Meniere's during the years when I wasn't wearing the night guard.  mmm, interesting concept.  I've found the Facebook group and will read about it.

How interesting! I'm glad you found the Facebook, I recommend just having a scroll and taking a look at testimonies. Often people who have splints (the treatment) don't see their symptoms permanently leave for about a year after using it. So, hypothetically, if TMJ is what caused Meniere's for you, the nightguard wouldn't have healed your issue (as it's less intense than a splint) but it probably would've helped a bit whilst you were using it by relieving pressure on the inner ear.

I just thought I would post this testimony that I found on a TMJ specialists website:

'I started to experience dizziness, nausea, loud tinnitus, ear pressure, neck pain, head pain, face pain and low level fatigue over a year ago (spring 2016)

…I associated this with a bad ear infection as many of the symptoms were the same. After a couple of visits to my GP, only to be told that my ears were fine and given antibiotics, I started to do my own research. I tried acupuncture and after 4 treatments and my symptoms getting worse, the Chinese Doctor mentioned I might have TMJ. After researching this (I'd never heard of it!) I was lucky enough to read some of the testimonials on Dr Grossmann's website and decided that it looked like this was the problem. After a consultation and a scan, Dr Grossmann confirmed my jaw joint was 'stuck' and recommended 3 months of splint therapy. Anyway to cut a long story short, my symptoms rapidly went away and I got my energy and confidence back. Dr Grossmann was very reassuring and everything he described happened. TMJ is a dreadful condition and compounded by the lack of information available and ignorance by General Practitioners ( who admittedly have a tough job). If my GP was able to diagnose this it would have saved everyone a lot of time and frustration. I'm extremely grateful to Dr Grossmann and am now living without any of the symptoms.Kind Regards, Daniel'

This has been the most interesting lead I've found since being diagnosed with Meniere's disease and I hope it can help someone else too.

Carol, I sincerely recommend you get to see a TMJ specialist! I've been speaking with multiple people who don't suffer from Meniere's anymore after getting their TMJ disorder fixed. I'm receiving treatment ASAP with mine. I wish you all the best, if you google the connection there are a few studies that have SUCH promising results. All the best x
