TN Jaw Pain

Posted , 5 users are following.

Do any of you have a deep down bone (it seems) jaw pain? If so do you get relief from this pain by just enduring the pain as you start to eat or talk and it will lessen or sometimes goes away for a short time? I can usually get around this pain by using only neck muscles to eat/swallow.

I am really confused about this condition and am becoming doubtful that it is TN and may be TMJ or something else. I do have a TN condition which may be entering into the equation and making things harder to sort out.

    Hello dick00331,

I've had TN since 07. Took a few years to move along from roots of molars, but deep jaw pain did begin. It jumps around left side (for me) upper/lower teeth, jaw bone - usually far back around the hinge. Tegretol keeps it managable. For jaw, I usually put up with it for 1-2 weeks. Then likely nothing at all for 1-2 weeks. Then round robin again. Just annoying as long as medication is where it needs to be. So keep the neurologist up to date.

Thanks for your comment I have endured for quite some time at least five years or more thinking the condition was TMJ. The recent tests and treatment have beamed in on TN and after you explanation maybe the jaw pain is TN but I stil have my doubts sometimes. The pain this morning is quite severe and will take your breath away for a couple of seconds when it flares up.

YES. That is what I had. Drugs worked for a few months but then had to get radiofrequency surgery which is a minor surgery, a few hours at the hospital, that got rid of it.  It came back in 7 months so they redid it at a higher frequency and so far, no problem, just some facial numbness which makes it hard to eat unless soft, but no pain.  So am happy.

Tn is a confusing condition. last week i had the lower jaw pain similar to what you describe which i found odd because all my TN pain has been to the upper teeth and face travelling back toward my ear until that moment. I used a heat bag and tried to relax and it slowly went away  so hoping not to get that one again as its a very strong pain. I was thinking TMJ (which is actually TMD in some web searches) because i beleive you can have both at the same time which is alarming. I know what you mean about the chewing though. With my other TN pain which stops me opening my mouth to eat i sometimes get some sugarless gum and very very slowly and very carefull begin to chew on the other side of my mouth and then again very slowly move it over to the tn side and try just one chew there. Sometimes, just sometimes, it lets me eat if i am careful. when i can eat i try to eat whats best for me because i dont know if next day or even next hour i wont be able to eat again.

Val as I said in an earlier post today....If I throw caution aside and endure the pain and continue to chew(very, very difficult I might add as I want to groan or whimper at the same time) it most often lessens but today it has been hammering me most all day with shooting pains and steady pain in between.
