TN type 2

I've been dealing with facial pain since December first thought it was tmj however xray show no sign of joint problems. After being fitted for a night guard I now suffer from a constant dull ache on the left side of my fce that goes into my bottom molers and electric type shocks occasionally. Dr ordered an mri and no sign there of blood vessels pushing on the nerve. He has put me on carbamazepine, that has stopped the electric shock kinda pain but the dull ache is still there. Does anyone know if it should work for both types of pain? Tia

Hi Gayle,
Sorry to hear you going thru this. I too had this type of constant dull ache pain, along with the sharp lightning bolt pain once in a while. My neurologist classified me as Atypical TN. Some days it felt like I got punched in the cheek or jaw and I wake up feeling the resulting ache of it in the morning. Carbamezepine did help after a month or so of taking it, but the aching/searing pain wasn't gone completely. I'm now off of carbamezepine because it lowered my wbc very low, and am now taking Proponolol. This has been my true saving grace. It reduces your heart rear but in the end it helps because it lowers your chances of getting an attack due to stress and anxiety of the pain itself. Gabapentin did absolutely nothing for me.

Mine is the same. Same meds & same amount of relief. I have started to take Turmeric 800 mg in the am
instead of the Carbamazapine. It's a spice, all natural & no side effects. It doesn't work at night though. I take the carbamazapine at night. I also have a mouth guard. When I had pain with it on I switched and started wearing one on top. To get rid of the pain at night I put sensitive tooth paste were it hurt. put the guard on & went to bed not laying on that side.
I've also changed my eating habits. No sugar, nothing containing tomato's pretty much glutton free. All these are triggers that cause pain. So much better now!
Hope this helps & you get pain free soon.
God's blessings to you!

It it is possible to experience Type 1 and Type 2 symptoms at the same time. Not sure if they would be treated differently.
wish you the best.
