I started 100mg of sertraline on Sunday, having been advised to do so by my doctor, and not really finding 50mg very effective.

Anyway, I am sorry if this sounds silly or neurotic, but today I have felt weak, feverish and sore throat and at first I just thought it may be me getting a cold/flu. However my brain is now thinking its a side effect, the weakness and achey limbs and I have started to feel very anxious, and this has made me fearful that I am having side effects and things will get worse and I will go mad. I am so easily worried, and then this makes me feel more anxious. Now I am on high alert to any new bodily sensation or feelings.

Can anyone offer any advice as to any of this?

Or anyone had similar side effects or experiences?

Thanks!

    Hi Jane,

I had side affects of weakness, sore throat and swollen glands whilst going up on setraline. I thought I was coming down with something but it only happened when I went up on a dose. The weakness wasn't very nice as I didn't feel happy about going out, it felt as if I'd been in bed for weeks with flu and didn't have the strength to get out except I hadn't had flu. As soon as the tablets settled all those symptoms went away. I also felt like my immune system was just really low but again that went away too.

    I hope that helps.

Hi Jane....I was taking Sertraline and had so many side effects,  one being a sore throat!   I didn't think it could be a side effect but after Go ogling several different sights I finally found one that did indeed list a sore throat and sore neck glands which I also had.  I am now on Effexor and have had way less side effects.   Some minor nausea in the morning and sometimes my throat is a bit scratchy on this drug also but all in all Effexor is a far better choice for me. I will NEVER take Sertraline again!!

    hi jane97070,

try and relax about the side effects, i read loads of stuff before i took mine and was worried about it but everyones bodys are different, you might have only a few, or even none, then again you could have loads, you just don't know and worrying yourself will drive you mad!! you're anxiety will more hightened to begin with, that seems to be the norm and some people have felt more depressed and others struggled to sleep at night or had nausea and upset stomache, but this is just the medication getting into your system so don't worry about it. from those side effects ive just mentioned, do you see how each on is so different from the other and any one of those you could start to notice, or you might not notice any difference. if you do start feeling any of those or any other side effects, like i noticed i couldn't stop yawning!! weirdly enough...........i didn't have any disturbed or sleepless nights, but other people on here have struggled loads with that, others have struggled with dickie tummys every day, i've not, had it 2-3 times since i've been on it.  i have lost weight though, but i could have done with losing a few pounds so not bothered about that, it's done me a favour in that respect!! but you just don't know how your body will react. but waiting for something to happen is going to make you more anxious. have you got any hobbies that you can do or are you working?? try and take your mind off it, sitting there analysing every sensation isn't going to do you any good, get out in the fresh air and just look foward to getting better and trust me, you will. you have to learn to trust your meds and let them do their job :-) don't worry xxx

    Hi,

Been on Sertraline few months,50mg..upped to 75mg and the sideaffects like gingermac yawning, flat appetite, increased thirst.Sleep fine. These occurred when I went up to 75mg. So after reading some of the side affects that's o.k. Deffo have taken the edge off. Tho not sure ide like to up them as may get a diffo lot of sideaffects.

Persevere if you can Jane or try 75mg as it's better to 'tweak' your meds as you've jumped to a 100 mg. Sensitive meds to get right seemingly.

Hi love I'm not the best to advise only because my doses are so low , I have only been 40mg now reducing to  30 then hopefully coming off I found I was worse the higher the dose , I don't understand why but since reducing I feel better than I have in a long time , loosing weight too which I'm thrilled about , I have also been reading about cbt cognitive therapy the result s are amazing try that too ,

I would say the type of antidepressant is not agreeing with you and research another without his ingredient in this family of antidepressant .

    Hope you settle down smile

Hi Clare not too bad thanks, certainly feel less depressed and a bit less anxious. I think it is helping me. It takes ages to work, weeks and weeks. I was expecting it to work sooner, and when it does work its gradual and subtle. Are you still on sertraline? How do/did you find it once side effects settled down?

I have side effects of diaherra sometimes, and vivid odd dreams.

Hi Jane, I'm glad it is working if only slowly! The doctor has put me up to 75mg now, I've gone to 67.5mg in the last week then up to 75mg this week. It's really weird has the side affects were terrible going up to 50mg but on 67.5mg I haven't noticed much difference at all so far (good or bad). When I first took these I was barely getting out the house now I will go out to about a mile or so but the good effects feel so much slow in coming, I really want to jump in my car and get out and about but I still don't have the guts so I'm hoping that all comes at some point.

When I was on them before and they settled there weren't any side affects at all.

Are you taking it for depression or anxiety or both? Did the flu symptoms disappear?

    hi jane

Yes I can relate to everything you are saying! I have been on 50mg for 18 days and feel pretty rubbish also and like you I am very sensitive to everything that's happening in my body!

I'm back at the docs on Tuesday so will see what they say about putting it up!

I'm driving my Husband mad and myself!

Wishing you well very soon x
