Toe fusion

Hi,

Have been to see my consultant who recommends that I have a toe fusion op. I had a cheilectomy op last year and it was not a success.

Worried about the success of this op and how it will affect my walking and if the rest of my foot could get worse eg more pressure elsewhere.

All comments  appreciated.

Rochelle.

Hi, I had a fusion and bunion removal in October and was worried like yourself but six months on I am glad I had it done, sometimes get slight pain in foot but nothing like before! I am on the waiting list for a cheilectomy on the other foot you have put me off a bit now lol,  I had my op done by a podiatrist surgeon who was recommended to me  by my friend who is a podiatrist, I have had about 5 steroid injections in my toe joint and they won't give me any more so I haven't really any options left.

Hi,Maybe the cheilectomy will work for you. My new consultant thinks that my toe was too bad for that op. and that I should have had the fusion straight away.

Can you walk long distances? Can you wear any size of heel?

Do you know others who had this op?

      Thanks.

Hi Rochelle, I had a double cheilectomy 2 years ago next month. The right one which was the most painful pre op has been soooo much better but the left one must have had more spurs in the inner area and seems to be caving in towards the other toes which in turn has caused Morton's neuroma (hard lumpiness around the nerve amongst the tarsal bones in the fourth toe) I was referred to a podiatrist and have seen 3 now, all with differing opinions. The result is shoe inserts to relieve the pain which do work but I am now in sandals with a toe bar from Hotters which are amazing in themselves. They are simiar to Birkenstocks.  I have read that alcohol injections for the joint pains are much more effective. I have also been told that I will eventiually need both big toes fused and was offered it primarily. I wish I had taken that to be honest but I will be seeking it for the left toe pretty soon I think!

I think that as the cheilectomy is less invasive and if it works, great.

My foot pain is quite bad and I have been told that I need  Toe Fusion.

I would like to hear from mor people who had this done.Do you know people who have had fusion?

I think it is the last option that is why I tried the cheilectomy last November and also had to have another general anaesthetic in December  to break up scar tissue formed by the first op.

Didn't think I would now be looking at a fusion so soon.

that's why I would like to hear from people who had the fusion.

No I don't know anyone else who has had it. The surgeon seemed to think it was the last option but also said I would eventually ask for it. The cheilectomies were meant to provide a temporary solution but I presumed there would be a longer remission from pain than there has been. sad
