Toe nails now not growing out with fungal toenail infection

Now 62 years old female with approx 25 years of fungal toenail infection.

My toe nails have stopped growing at all so any topical solution I put on is irrelevant as it only claims to work preventing the infection in new growth but there is'nt any!

Why have my toe nails stopped growing whereas my finger nails do grow? However the two thumbnails always split horizontally near the top! also have become lightly ridged vertically.

At the time of diagnosis by my Doctor he prescribed Grisiofulvin but after taking two tablets I suffered with severe stomach pain so he basically said not to take them and that I have to live with the condition.

Is there any help out there?

I have suffered with this problem longer than you and the only thing that has helped is Nailner pen. Expensive but I seem to have cleared the infections and new nails have now started growing.   Dont buy the liquid with brush...only the pen.

Most medications by mouth for fungal infections cause the problems you have described.

Not sure if this is available in all countries. Try Boots the Chemist if you are in UK.

Hi, you could try to find an experienced dermatologist offering laser therapy. Certain wavelengths are capable of destroying nail fungus. It is not cheap as you would most likely require several sessions. It should be done with a high powered laser device capable of delivering enough energy at a relatively large beam size. Otherwise treatment sessions will take longer and are less effective since the dermatologist has to carefully scan every nail in an overlapping pattern.

If all toe nails are affected topical treatment is rather impractical and can be costly as well. I have managed to get rid of nail fungus using a dressing with Lamisil every night. But only one toe nail was affected. And it was a laborious task applying the dressing every night for several months.

    Hi Kate,

Has your doctor checked your biotin levels? Biotin deficiency can cause the symptoms you are describing. But it is nothing to be afraid.

Have you ever tried Fugacil? It worked pretty well for my toenail fungus and a new nail grew back after 3 months of using this product. I've never tried oral antifungal medicines because I've heard that they might cause side effects like what you were experiencing. In some rare cases, liver damage may occur.

      Hi Eve,

May I ask what the appearance of your toenail fungus was. Mine has 2 nails coming off and my nails are discolored somewhat. A light reddish color. I was given an antibiotic to take but after 2 capsules I felt like I was dying as well as being scared of liver damage so I stopped taking it.

Also was Fugasil the only thing you tried?
