Told to wear shoes after surgery- pain!

Posted , 12 users are following.

I am two weeks two days post surgery. I have been told to wear my trainers most of the day by the hospital. That was hard but u could cope. Now the pain is awful. I know it is to reduce swelling but I couldn't continue today so I've taken them off and gone for the frozen peas instead.

I couldn't find any info about this problem so decided to post myself. (The saver here is obscuring my writing so sorry if there are any errors). Has any one had any experience with this? Or any advice please? Thanks a lot!

Only two weeks and into trainers? I had  stitches out at 2 weeks and have been told to keep surgical boot on for another 3 weeks, I have had pins in two toes but you do seem to be out of boot early?

Hi, I'm nine weeks post op and have only been wearing pumps or wide shoes occasionally, my physio told me to keep wearing the protective boot. I also had the dressing removed and knots taken out after two weeks. I wore pumps today for a few hours and my toe is really painful !

Hi, please don't feel disappointed and, if it helps, I'm almost five weeks and wouldn't like to get any type of shoe on yet. The most likely type of shoe is going to be a soft boot, ie UGG, etc (other makes are available!!), so I'm still wearing my big foam boot when I'm out and slipper boots in the house. I'm also keeping my foot elevated as much as possible to reduce the swelling. Hope that helps, but listen to your foot, it will tell you whether you're doing the right thing for it.

    Hi,

I'm exactly the same! 2 weeks and 2 days and they told me to wear trainers. I haven't tried trainers yet let alone any shoe on my foot! Its still swollen and bruised i'm too scared to even touch it!!

I really thought i'd need to wear my shoe that they gave me at the hospital for at least another week or so cos alot of people on here have had to wear them for 4-6 weeks! Unsure why I don't have to wear it maybe its just what my surgeon does?!

Like most of the replies I was told quite firmly that I would be in special heel walking boots for 6 weeks. I really wouldn't have been able physically or mentally to put on trainers or weight bearing shoes at 2 weeks. Who at the hospital told you to walk in normal trainers? I would get 2nd opinion.

I was the same as Bev. 6 weeks in Darco sandals before I was allowed to wear shoes of any kind.  I had a bi-lateral procedure (MICA) and now 12 weeks post op. Feet still become a little sore sometimes but delighted with the results! It was all worth it.  Very little pain anyway.  Good luck everyone!

I'm sure most people will agree that even wearing a SOFT shoe after a month post surgery would be quite painful let alone two weeks two days in trainers. I can't even see how you could even get your foot inside it! I had my surgery last May, and wore my Darko boot for about six weeks after having the stitches removed. I then bought sandals with velcro straps which I found quite comfortable to wear a few hours a day, my foot would swell after a while so still elevated it as much as possible. I was able to join a walking group in late September, which I enjoy once a week. I bought myself a new pair of low heeled leather boots last December and I wear trainers quite comfortably now and play table tennis most days. I agree with bev52304 get a second opinion, two weeks post op is far too soon to be out of the Darko boot.
