Tonsillitis keeps coming back

Posted , 4 users are following.

In the last six month I’ve had tonsillitis 5 times. Symptoms usually start with very dry sore throat and then feeling feverish and chills then pus on tonsils. When on antibiotics symptoms calm down but as soon as I get off them I immediately start to feel symptoms again. Can’t remember the last time I felt well and didn’t have to take pain meds! Have discussed tonsillectomy with doctors but they seem to be discouraging it.  Has anyone else had this problem?

I had a friend who went through this - u are referring to paletine tonsils.

Pus definitely means infection.   My friend went to hospital eventually they put the antibiotics through IV.  And they can use stronger antibiotics. But they seem hesitant about that these days also.

Keep going back to your GP. See another surgeon if you have to for 2nd opinion perhaps?

But the reason why they are hesitant should be asked.

I think it's cos your immune system is housed at this first contact via your nose/mouth.  The fighting immune system is in the tonsils.

Taking tonsils out when I was young was something everyone did.  But we are the people who they think have weak immune systems.and use all tge antibiotics   ( I have but I am rare). My husband is never Sick.  In fact he had a sore throat once for 3 days and couldn't cope.  Nothing wrong with his immune system.

But i think 5 times is a lot and if u repeat what u have said above about about not being able to remember the last time you felt well.  Ask your GP what the guidelines are for this in your country. Or CDC   And ask WHY they are hesitant about tonsil removal. Have a Google and see if u agree or not.

Some ENT surgeons. U can email in advance about tonsillectomy.

I think I will email my ENT about my lingual tonsils.

another thing- are u still fighting the same infection 5 times?

Cos u may get well and never get tonsillitis again. But if u had reoccurring bouts of illness

    it may be seen differently.

I feel for u.  It's very painful.  6 months of feeling unwell is horrid

the ENT said to me. Boost your immune system. But never said how.  And nobody seems to have the answer.

What makes me cross is how inconvenient and expensive specialist appointments are in Australia.

Time consuming.  Take care of yourself.  Rest. Fluids. Vit c. Rest. Rest. And see your GP good luck

Thanks Rhonda! I think I will have to insist on seeing ENT specialist or go to a private doctor as seems nhs might be reluctant to fund them. Had a read online & lots of people seem to have had great experiences not getting tonsillitis again after it!

An update: The day before my tonsillectomy i ended up in hospital after blacking out. I had tonsillitis again & was given antibiotics through IV. Tonsillectomy has been postponed for two weeks as riskier to operate on inflamed tonsils.  doctors now keeping me on antibiotics until then!

      Hi Emily,

Have you spoke about this "laryngeal-sensory-neuropathy" to your Dr. ?

Sorry just want to ask. Are you allowed to get tonsillectomy while on antibiotics?
    • Posted

Yes you are. I think once you have tonsillectomy booked, you should ask doctor if you can be kept on antibiotics until the operation so that you don’t get tonsillitis and have to postpone tonsillectomy like me. I took antibiotics until the night before my tonsillectomy and then after the op the doctor gave me some new antibiotics to prevent any post tonsillectomy infections.

Hi! I have had the tonsillectomy now, it went well. The surgeon said my tonsils were not enlarged but they were scarred - so I think that’s why they kept getting infected. Woke up from tonsillectomy was given morphine, pain was ok for day 1 and 2 maybe because aneasthesia and morphine. Day 3 and 4 of recovery are the most painful so far, swallowing really really hurts, but have been able to eat mushed food/soup 3x a day once codeine kicks in.

Im glad that your surgery went well. May I ask what kind of antibiotics given to you? Doctor did throat swabs came negative. But my right tonsils are still swollen and sore. It wont heal by itself. Im scheduled for tonsillectomy on Aug 7.

Thanks! Before surgery I was given penicillin to clear up the tonsillitis and kept on it to prevent it. After surgery was given amoxiclav for a week just in case I caught an infection. Hope yours goes well!!

My tonsils are finally out! Im on day 2 today.... do you take any for pain? Also the gauze in my throat is really uncomfortable.... i want to take it out so bad. What day does it hurt the most?

Congrats! I’ve just recovered and it’s definitely worth it at the end smile I don’t know what you mean by gauze? I didn’t have one. Day 6-8 hurt the most for me as scabs started to fall off. Stay on top of pain meds and set a timer even to wake up and take them so it’s under control. I also had a humidifier which helped so much

The surgeon put a dissolving gauze on my throat after the surgery and its still there sometimes i couldnt breathe properly. She also told me I dont need anti biotics. Did you take any pain killers? Ive been crying all day cause of pain and Im only on day 4. What kind of foods were you eating ?

I think antibiotics are given as a preventative measure, but they are not always given. I was prescribed co-codamel (I think around 15mg codeine and 500mg paracetamol) and I could take 1 or 2 pills every 4hrs and also Neurofen every 6 hours. Pain was unbearable at times. Putting an ice pack over my throat helped slightly, especially after eating. I know it’s horrible but it is a few days, by day 9/10 you should start to feel much better. There are lots of recovery tips online. I’d recommend asking for strong painkillers though as crying all day probably isn’t normal. Hope you feel better soon
