Hi all thanks for ur replies yesterday was wondering if anyone else suffers with not being able to swallow food feels like ur chokeing

    Hi there

    Not been on here for a while so haven't followed previous discussion but just to say the only time I had this issue with eating & swallowing was when my anxiety was bad. Sometimes when you're so poorly or depressed it can bring on this symptom.

    Hope things improve for you soon.

    Hi Tony...did not see previous conversation but I do have trouble eating when in flare ups especially. Feels like suffocating when trying to eat and breathe at same time. I really cannot stand drinking cold beverages either for same reason. I am really scared of inhaling food while eating. I did have a really scary choking event during a flare up. I think because I was working harder to inhale, the food just choked me. I coughed for about 15-20 minutes and could not stop. I don't know how I didn't vomit. There is nothing wrong with my swallowing because I did have it tested. I lose weight pretty fast during flares because I just don't want to eat for this reason. I now drink warm beverages. I even warm up water and it goes down much easier. Good luck!😊

      Hi Debra thanks for that I did ave barium swallow it don't happen regular just thought there was only me suffering like that but it's nice to find out information from people who ave same illness good luck to you

    Tony,

    Every so often, I will start choking while eating.  I think my issue is that I take a mouth full of food and then start to cough.  My first reflex is to try and stop the cough and I end up breathing in, resulting in having food go down my airpipe.

    But, I have noticed that when ever I see my pulmonary speicalist, one of the questions that is always asked by the nurse is: Do you have difficulties swallowing?

    I have heard that people who have acid reflex have that problem. The acid reflex causes coughing as well. You may want to have it checked out with your doctor.

      Hi Elizabeth yes I take an acid tab due to Aving acid reflux but been on tabs for yrs I've never ad this problem before until found out ad b x that why ad barium swallow test to see what was making swallow food hard but thanks for advice

      You should talk to your specialist about it, since you are taking something for the reflex.
