Took x4 7.5mg and x2 3.75 Zopiclone

For quite a few years I've been struggling with getting/staying asleep. I'm 21 and female. I originally took

  • x2 -- 7.5mg -- Zopiclone, hoping it would help me sleep. It made zombie-like, but I still couldn't sleep. So, without thinking, I headed into the kitchen
  • And took another x2 -- 7.5mg -- Zopiclone
  • And x2 -- 3.75mg of the same medication. This did help me sleep, but didn't really ware off the waking up through the night. But, when I woke up I felt tired, groggy and my balance was a little off. Should I be worried? My mum is a pharmacist technician and has hidden them away thinking of a different motive due to past reasons. I don't know whether to get checked out. The NHS have enough going on with the Coronavirus outbreak. Any advise?

    Hi Kirsty

How come you have access to both the 3.75 and the 7.5 forms? This is highly unusual prescribing.

So in one night that adds up to 30mg. If so you are very lucky to have woken up at all.

I have managed to reduce my intae to 3.75mg per night but I do still wake 2-3 times. I have learned that 'thats just me' but if combined I can get six hours sleep then that is good enough for me.

You need to book in for a telephone appointment with your GP. I cant say what the right dose if for YOU but I can say that what you have taken is the wrong dose for anyone. Zop is a contolled drug, addictive and too many will have high repercussions. You mention C19....so speak to your GP - dont take too many and then become a drain on our NHS by having to have you stomach pumped!!

      Hi there,

Thank you for getting back to me. Fortunately, I'm back to old self and the doctor had originally prescribed the lower dose, but after a few months we decided to switch to the higher dose. This is why I am in possession of both dosages.

The Zopiclone has been hidden by my mum as mentioned of her profession above. She decided to monitor me throughout the day and we decided that I was fine, and didn't require any medical attention.

A Pharmacist Technician is not a Pharmacist and even LEGALLY allowed to advise on medication. Let alone recommend to her own daughter. These are classed as a controlled drug and highly regulated. MY own GP asked and trusted me to take my old higher dose tablets into a local chemist or back to the GPs to be destroyed so that I didnt have both in the house. You mum would lose her job, if this came out. You might think you are trying to do the best in terms of C19 but longer term it the damage to you, or the risk of an overdose. The amount you took the other night is highly irregular and could have killed you or certainly damaged your organs.

Its like saying a classroom teaching assistant is the same as a teacher or a hospital porter the same as a doctor.

Just call your GP and book a telephone appointment and get proper medical advise.

      Good luck.

Everything you've said is false and you're potentially inducing anxiety in someone with severe insomnia by suggesting that her post could result in her mum being fired.

Kirsty's mum never "recommended" anything, and regardless of her profession, she was monitoring her daughter AS A MOTHER. She has a responsibility to her daughter as parent and this could easily include taking her medication away, given her daughter had just overdosed on a CNS depressant, and monitoring her for adverse effects. If her symptoms worsened, she could have taken Kirsty to A&E but obviously this wasn't necessary.

By your logic, anyone who is a pharmacy technician and has a child should just ignore their child's overdose "as they could lose their job"... Think before you post...

      Hi Phil,

I'm starting to wonder if I may have insomnia. I can eventually get some sleep, but it's not until 6-8am when I actually do fall asleep. The lower dose never did work for myself and we tried the high dose. I hadn't taken them for a long time as I didn't want to depend on medication for the rest of my life. Fortunately, I'm fine as my mother monitored me over 24 hours and now I feel back to my old self.

      Thank you for the response!
