Throbbing tooth pain, upper and lower. Had many teeth removed. Didn't help. Had MRI, ct scan, X-rays of head sinus and neck. No diagnosis of TN. Dentist and one Dr., did say they believed it was TN. On Gabapentine. Helps somewhat. Side effects not fun. Anyone else experience this ??

I can empathize! Nothing seemed to work for me either. Then the dr. said take more Carbamazapinr. That took the pain away. I hated the side effects also. Then I was reading in a magazine about Turmeric. It's a spice, all natural & no side effects. (You can buy this at any storeI) takes pain away 12-14 hours. For some reason it didn't work at night so I took the prescribed med Carbamazapine & slept through the side effects.

Acupuncture also is a huge relief of the pain. By the end of the 2nd trip to see him I was pain free. The symptoms did come back. I went back again, got relief but ran out of money. The insurance didn't pay. To be totally free it could take up to 20 visits. I couldn't afford to keep this up.

Since then I've been taking the Turmeric in the am & Cabamazapine at night.

I have totally changed my eating habits. No sugar, nothing with tomato's, no fruit (It has natural sugar. All thesesare triggers to set it off. I can actually say I am totally pain free now as long as I follow this regiment!

      Hi Vicki

How do you take the Tumeric? What amount a day, mixed in food, etc?  Thanks for the advice. I do appreciate any help. Iam 68, and don't have insurance to cover acupuncture. Can't afford it either.  These Drs., seem to think our pockets are endless supplies for them.

Hey Janice.  Sorry to hear you are suffering. I went through a very similar experience. Had mouth injury from biting into tortilla chip when it stabbed the base of my mouth. Had oral surgery, root canal, tooth pulled, and another oral surgery, all to no avail. Ultimately was diagnosed from last oral surgeon with TN. Have been dealing with it for over 5 yrs now.  Was on gabapentin & other drugs in that class, which helped in very high doses, but had to stop because it dropped my white blood cell counts very low.  Now on amitriptyline, which works well in high doses, but causes drowsiness, significant dry mouth, & severe memory loss, so take enough just to dull the pain a bit. About a year ago, I started researching alternative therapies and came across cannabidiol (extracted from hemp), and it has been LIFE CHANGING! It takes high doses, but side effects are next to nil, and positive at that with relaxation. The only negative impact being financial as it is expensive, but worth every penny, in my opinion; and I'm confident it will get cheaper if not covered by insurance as it becomes more widely accepted & prescribed within the medical community.  I highly recommend to do your diligence, and give it a try. And please let me know if you need any guidance in that regard. Hope you feel better soon!

      Hello HOC

         Your reply was helpful. Thanks.

Right now , the Dr. has found a problem with my sinuses. Will find out on Thursday what it's about. Neurologist called, he seems to think it may be phantom tooth pain. Huh. Why is this so hard to diagnose?? Iam at wits end!!   All of the Drs., I've seen have made noncommittal Guesses. Iam so tired!! Last month I had pneumonia and bronchitis. Iam at the bottom physically and emotionally!!!  At 68 years old this is tough. I need to find the reason for this pain.
