Tooth filling

Hi all.

I wondered if anyone could advise me. I'm having left THR surgery on 17th December and would you believe I'm due to gave a couple of tiny tooth cavities filled on the 15th, just 2 days before my surgery. Is it safe to go ahead and have the dental work done? I would imagine that it will involve having a local anaesthetic. I don't want anything to compromise my THR surgery. Has anyone else had this dilemma?

I know that there are restrictions on what if any dental work you can have done but I have no idea exactly. I think the best thing to do is call and ask your dentist, xxxx

Check up with doctor. I wass told no teeth cleanings or any

dental work least 3 to 6 months after surgery. If i need any dental work after surgery i will need to have an antibiotics to prevent

Infections. Best to check with your doctor.

    Hi Joy

Not sure about before, but after you need to take antibiotics when visiting Dentist the day before, on the day, and the day after.  Usually quite high doseage too!  The reason being that apparently you could have bacteria which could cause an infection leak into your bloodstream and this then circles the body and if you are unlucky could seep into the new hip and cause an infection whch then means a possible operation again to clean the new hip of all infection.  It is apparently a very important part of the THR not to get infections in it in the early stages, although I believe this information is for life.  Every time a visit to the dentist - antibiotics must be taken.  Query with your Doctor as a matter of urgency and also the Dentist, if you trust him to be aware of this type of thing.

If in doubt just take the antibiotics, you will not hurt yourself taking them, but you may stop any further problems down the line

I was told that if I needed any treatment it should be done at least five days before pre-op tests to ensure any infection was picked up in the tests. And preferably no dental treatment for three months after.

I'd check with the doctor, as there is no certainty the dentist  would know the answer.

Joy, Avoid anything that might result in a bone infection. The treatment is horrid.

There is a report in today's Times of a Duke (only 55) who has just returned home in a wheelchair having had his joint removed. He may have to wait 8 weeks before getting a new one.

I had to get a release from my dentist prior to the surgery saying all needed dental work was completed. Tell them about the upcoming surgery. They put me on Abtibiotics Post surgery but not sure about before surgery. So get it done, call dentist before hand in case you need to take antibiotics ,that way they could call a script into the pharmacy

I would say no. My dr had me get clearance first from my dentist that all was good prior to surgery. That is good for 3 months. There is another test that had to be done prior to surgery, I can't remember off hand what it is now, but that test was only good for 30 days prior and was also hospital rule. Double check with your dr. Best of luck to you!! LD
