Tooth Pain

Hi, everyone! I've been diagnosed with atypical odontalgia, and it's maddening. It usually localizes in one spot in my teeth and may stay there for weeks, or months, only to spontaneously move. Both sides of my mouth have been affected but only one at a time . The pain is constant, with some periods of relief, but mostly awful. Recently, I've felt some shocks in my tooth that's been hurting, but all the dental professionals say it's not my teeth. I'm on gabapenrin and cymbalta at the moment and not really sure they are helping much. Can anyone relate to this?? It began after chipping a back molar over a year ago. Any advice is appreciated!

    Hi Christy,

I can totally relate to your pain. I have never felt so alone in my life.... I don't know one single person who has this. So I researched forums and found this.

I've had throbbing pain in my back upper molar since may 2016. The tooth has no infection, no cavity. Nothing.

The Endo did 2 root canals on that one tooth thinking removing the nerves will do. But the pain did not go away.

I've had a pano X-ray, cone beam scan,

Steroids, daily ibuprofen 1000mg per day, Tylenol Pm at night, antibiotics,

Gabapentin and nothing helps. The pain is constant and throbs.

I did try Accupuncture , 12 sessions and electro therapy on my cheek. The pain dissapeared for exactly 4 months and had just returned. So I'm in pain all over again in the exact same tooth. I have a new nightguard and that doesn't help either....

At least you've been diagnosed with tn.

I've had no diagnosis. My dentist just thinks I have facial muscle pain but I swear everyone who I tell about my constant tooth pain thinks I'm crazy.

Well it's driving me crazy indeed. It's so frustrating..... I just hope we both have relief asap. I'm so Done taking all these medications. I'm going to go back for more Accupuncture.

One of my friends who had a constant tooth ache after her crown was placed went through some nagging pains. But just thought it was the crown. X-ray s did now show any fractures. And the pain persisted. She got her tooth extracted last week and it turned out she had a vertical fracture which sometimes cannot be seen on the X-ray.

When it's nerve related if it truly is. Even if we extract the tooth, the pain can still be there....

Is the gabapentin and cymbalta giving you any relief at all?

Hi, Kim! Omg so frustrating!! Thank for your reply! My doctors diagnosed me with atypical facial pain and said it's absolutely NOT TN. The pain has been in one spot (feels like my front tooth) for the last 6 months and is pretty much constant. I've had countless root canals done, but after the 4th one, I knew something else was going on. My pain moves from quadrant to quadrant (upper right, lower left) but is only in one spot at a time. So incredibly maddening. It so convincingly feels like it's a tooth, but I'm always told it's not. I've had so much dental work done in my life, so I always assume it's a tooth. The gabapentin doesn't seem to do much, but the cymbalta has helped a little. How about you?? Has your pain ever moved around or has it stayed in that same spot?? Thanks so much for your help!!

    Hi Christy,

Same throb, different day. This tooth is not settling down. I popped some Tylenols today and of course it doesn't really help much. My pain does not travel to other quadrants. It is localized and just in that back upper molar tooth.

I'll also occasionally get a little headache in that side and some pain near the sinus. But I've been confirmed twice for not having a sinus infection.

I'm beyond frustrated and just tired of this tooth. overall my teeth are in great shape. I do not have any other restorations in my mouth so it's just so strange....

    How's your pain level today?

Hoping our pain magically disappears and we can share a pain free email.

    Have you ever tried Accupuncture?

      Hi, Kim!

How are you feeling today?? No, I've never tried acupuncture, but have friends who swear by it. That's my next move! So crazy you were pain free for 4 months only to have it return! Are they absolutely sure it isn't dental related?? I get pain that stays in one spot for days!or months, then will shift to another spot. So odd.... my dentist and endodontist are so fed up with me going back in and asking them to check my teeth "one more time"... I wish each time they find something because I can't imagine having pain like this forever - going on a year and a half now....today was a decent day. Some days I'm in so much pain, I just have to sit and wait it out .... so awful. Keep me posted!! Makes me feel like I'm not alone! My husband thinks I research this too much, but I just can't accept the diagnosis....

    Hi Christy,

How are you feeling today? I'm still throbbing as usual. I bought a tens unit (muscle stimulation device) on amazon recently. They used this on me in my Accupuncture sessions so I decided to buy my own for like $35.00.

I use the small patch and place it on my cheek where the tooth ache is and put it onto Accupuncture mode. I'm thinking if it's facial pain then this device can help stimulate those muscles. So far, no relief.

Let me know if you get any relief when you try the Accupuncture.

I am right behind you on the chronic pain. I'm at 1 year 4 months now.

Ironically I'm in dental sales too so my clients are dentists. I've consulted with many and you and I are like a medical mystery. Why the pain can't just dissapear is weird and frustrating.

Like you, I don't want to have this pain forever. I can't tell you how much I've googled on the atypical facial pain etc

My husband feels bad for me.

    Hoping for a miracle.

I'm hoping for a miracle, too!! I literally woke up one day and had pain that never went away! How old are you, if you don't mind me asking?? I'm 36 and real all this research on how these "ailments" seem to affect older people but who knows. Have you tried your TENS unit again? I hope it brings you some relief! Are you talking any meds that help?? I'm currently on gabapentin and cymbalta and not sure how much they help / every day is different ... how do you feel today??
