Topical antiseptic recommendations

Posted , 2 users are following.

Have been using Dixie dew for quite some time but appears they are out of business and no longer available.

For itching and burning this worked quite well.

Active ingredients were AS Alcohol 40, Camphor, Boric Acid

Other ingredients water, menthol, liquid phenol, peppermint, pennyroyal

Mainly for itching and burning associated with my PHN, can anyone recommend some good otc antiseptic topical solutions?

Aspercreme is good at decreasing itching, and works pretty fast for me. Triamcinolone acetonide cream is a prescription topical cream that works less immediately on itching, but works much more completely. It is usually prescribed for eczema.

I dont think antisepsis has much to do with PHN. It is not caused by bacteria, but by nerve damage from shingles. It also has little to do with the herpes virus, as once PHN sets in the virus has already been put in remission. The virus has already had its effect by damaging nerves.

Another treatment for itching from PHN:  Drink a large glass of water when you are having an itching exacerbation. For me this stops the itching in about 30 min. Why this works?  My guess is that the itching is greatly magnified by even mild dehydration
